If you dont have one on your phone and electrical running to your computter and t/v then GET ONE. Last night we had a close call with lightening and that saved the electronics. The lightening blew the phone side. If it had gone through then I wouldn't be typing this right now. Save yourself the hassel and get one.

Good advice.
I've got some Nice old Isobar Surge supressors for the TV's and stuff and a UPS for each PC.
We've had some real bad lightning and on more than one occasion I've woke up in the morning after a storm and found that my NIC card was kacked.
The cat5 cables seem to act as antennas so if you are home and a storm is overhead, shut down and unplug everything on both ends, your PC and your cable modem/router.
A UPS is great for your PC. Those 360VA units they have at Walmart will run a PC for about a minute (just the tower not the monitor too). The APC software lets you set the PC up for automatic shutdown. 30 seconds is good.
You need a 750 VA or bigger to run your PC, monitor for any length of time.

I use Vonage and have the modem, router and Vonage phone box all connected to a 1500 VA ups. If I turn off the monitor, I have one hour of run time showing on the ups. So my phone will stay on for one hour. After that I use a prepaid cell phone.

Well latest saga. Forgot to get a new surge protecter and this time took out the modem, Wireless router, answering machine. Oh and it blew the box off the side of the house. What a mess.

Wow!!! When a storm gets close, I throw the main breaker to the house.
