Zoey is my Arabian mare that just had a foal a week ago. Today she is stumbling and doesn't seem to have any balance. She is eating fine and drinking fine though.

I called the vet and he thinks it might be EPM (Equine Protozoal Myeloencephalitis). There is treatment, but not always a cure. The vet is on the way here to do a blood test to see if that is what it might be.

This is the very first horse I have owned. The kids and DH have had horses, but this is mine. She is 13 and I love her.

Please pray for her.

Thanks.

The vet was just here and took blood. He is going to overnight it to KY for testing. We are hoping it is negative.

He thinks it is a good chance that her back is out of whack from having the baby. That is a trip to the horse chiro and that will have to wait until the baby is weaned. It isn't safe right now to trailer her and the baby with her being so unsteady.

Please pray that it is just her back.

Thanks in advance.

Sending thoughts and prayers your way. She's a very lucky horse to have someone who cares about her so deeply.

Zoey is doing ok. As long as she doesn't have to make any quick moves, she is pretty stable on her feet. The vet called and she does have EPM and we are starting her on a course of treatment. He said she most likely will not get any better, but if not treated, she would die or need to be put down.

My heart is breaking as I love this horse, she is so special to me.

We are getting vaccines for the other 11 horses on the place and we will most likely have to wait to vaccinate the foal.

Thanks for all the prayers.

Don't give up on her! I was so close a few weeks back ...
My oldest mare was late foaling. It was her third foal and the other foalings went well so I knew something was off but she was eating and moving around fine. She was waxed and ready yet no foaling.
I went to bed and hubby did the checks. I got up at 1 am and found her down but not getting anywhere. It was snowing, blowing and colder than cold. I helped her thru that foaling but in all the years of foaling out mares I have never, ever had a harder delivery. She was in so much pain! I was in the mud, snow and cold in my pj's! The baby was twisted. Three hours later the foal was here and her dam was weak but alive!
They are both doing fine and she's the great mom she always is.
But ... believe me when I say ... hearing her scream in pain made me wonder ... is a bullet better than this for her? But, being who I am I had to give her and the foal a chance. It took me longer to recover than the old girl!

Thanks for the encouragement. I am not giving up on her, but I also won't let her suffer. At the moment she is doing fine and is able to nurse her foal and is eating well. The vet said that if we leave it untreated it will slowly kill her. We are getting all of the other horses vaccinated just in case and when my grandsons come for their summer visit we are going to give the big barn a thorough cleaning.
