View Full Version : Question about solar for small objects

My son just got approved for a talking device. Basically it is a touch screen electronic thing that will talk for him. This is a HUGE blessing, but I am worried about what will happen if we can not charge it. It has an internal battery like a laptop. It seems it would be unbearably cruel to give him the ability to speak and then have it taken away.

My question is.....how would I go about finding solar something to charge it with? I can charge it in the car or with electricity, but if we lost one the other would not be far behind. I have heard of people having solar chargers for a laptop - where would I find one and would it work for any small appliance?

Thanks for your patience with what is probably a dumb question. :)

I would say start with your local Radio Shack, then try a computer store.

Online you can try these sources. But it all depends on the compatability.

I know this is stupid, but just to make sure I have it right before I drive 50 miles....you are saying I should take the talking device into Radio Shack and they can help me?

Thanks. There is a local solar company that set up our well solar, but they "don't deal with portable appliances."

i bought a large battery pack on wheels, ill look it up tomorrow and get the name, but its pretty cool. you plug it in to charge it at first, but i also got a small solar battery charger to use for it if needed. i can run a few small things on it, probably not a big tv, but it think it will run a laptop.

it was a bit pricey about $300 but i really like it.

It would be better to call them first. Give them the device discription and manufacturer model number, plus any info you can glean off the actual battery itself. If they can't help you, ask them to refer a company that could. The same process would go for a computer store.

If it is that far away, no sense wasting the gas.

I would suggest first of all contacting the manufacturer of the talking device. I'm quite sure that you won't be the first customer to ask about alternative means of operation in a power failure and chances are that they would be your best guide so that your warranty will still be honored in the event of a surge from some other source.

would something like this work.

It will depend on your battery but if you can charge it off the car battery then this might fit the ticket.
