Remember if there is any power outage/water system shutdown, due to earthquake, storm, etc. The water in your hot water heater is still potable (drinkable), and can be used as a source of drinking water. Attach a hose to the drain valve at the bottom of the water heater, and drain what you need into a container.
Any other ideas?

Urine, save it up. It is less salty than your blood level and you can get buy for a couple days without bad side effects.
but after about 4-6 days you kindeys will shut down because of the build up of toxins.
Just saying. maybe someone has a better idea. Couldn't be any worse.

Does your hot water stink? It is a rather common complaint, especially if you use water from a well. It is caused by sulfates in the water and there are two variations. One is the anode rod reacts with the water to release hydrogen sulfide (sewer gas) and the other is if your heater is set at a certain temperature bacteria can grow in the water and release HS. In the first case you get your anode rod replaced with a different kind, in the other you turn the temperature higher or lower until the smell subsides. It won't make the water great, but it will make it better.
Another thing you might want to think about is a still tent. Something like a large black plastic bag with a simple frame to support it inside. You want it high at the edges and hanging down in the center. You can put urine, stinky water, or even damp dirt in the bag, set a small bowl in the middle, and get a pint or two per day of distilled water using solar power. Just don't waste too much sweat digging the damp earth. I don't think anybody is going to drink urine without distilling it first.

Sometimes they make you do it so when in a survival situation you will get over it and stay alive.
They being sargets that yell at you, real loud, and promise worse things will happen to you if you don't do it. But then not every one got to go to some of the schools I went to.

Obtain a cap from the local hardware to place on the drain spiggot. If the heater is not flushed on a regular basis, sediment in the tank will prevent the valve from closing completely (leak). It will also keep insects out.
Opening a hot water faucet will facillitate draining when needed.
Saul, there is also the sheet of CLEAR plastic covering a pit dug in the ground. Weight the edges of the sheet with stones and place a single small stone in the center of the pit to make a collection point. Line the hole with moisture containing materials. Sunlight will pass through the plastic and heat the items in the pit, increasing moisture release-collection.

In the East there is usually a stream or so nearby, if that is the case get a good filter...even a good filter will filter urine...99.9% that means for every thousand turds there is still one in your water :0

For water you should have a good filter like a Katadyn pocket or mini ceramic. You can find water in most any environment if you do follow the stream up until you find a small trickle and then follow it to the source. If you find the source you can almost be about 95-98% sure it is pure. This is some of what I teach at my survival school.

We have both the Katadyn and the Big Berkey. I like the Berkey a little better only because it is stainless steel, both function very well.
We recently bought a couple of Sport Berkeys. My DW took one on the trip to MN this past month. She said it functions very well. She stops for fuel, coffee and to fill up her filter. No problem filling it with ice and water. Said it is the best water she has ever had on a trip back there.
I don't trust bottle water. Hold a bottle of Evian bottle water up to a mirror and see what it spells!
