I appreciate ease in preparing meals sometimes. This is one of my favorite homemade mixes. I keep a jar in the cupboard all the time. By the time I can cook some noodles, I can make the sauce with this mix.
Spaghetti Sauce Mix
1 t. beef bouillion (or soup base)
1 1/2 t. powdered sugar
1 t. cornstarch
1/4 t. oregano
1/4 t. thyme
1/4 t. onion powder
1/8 t. garlic powder
pinch of ground black pepper
Mix all ingredients. I make several batches of this and store in a small jar with the preparation method taped to it.
To prepare:
1. In a medium saucepan, combine seasoning mix (4 1/2 t. if you made it in multiple batches), 1 T. oil (optional), desired tomatoes and amount of water listed below.
2. Bring to a boil, then simmer, stirring frequently, as directed below.
3. Makes about 1 pint sauce - 4 (1/2 cup) servings
Tomatoes, Water, and Cooking times.
1 can (6 oz) tomato paste, 1 1/2 cups water, 5 minutes
1 can (15 oz) tomato sauce, 3/4 cup water, 5 minutes
2 cups (16 oz) crushed tomatoes, 1/2 cup water, 15 minutes
2 cups (16 oz) carton pack tomatoes, omit water, 15 minutes
For a spicier tomato sauce:
1 can (15 oz) tomato sauce, 1/2 cup water, 15 minutes
For a chunky homestyle sauce:
1 can (14.5 oz) whole tomatoes, cut up and drained, 1/3 cup water, 15 minutes
1 1/4 pounds fresh, ripe tomatoes, pureed, omit water, 40 minutes
Note:
Meat, mushrooms, or other goodies can be added, if desired.

It hardly makes sense to prepare your own spaghetti sauce. You can buy sauce perfectly made and already canned for less than your cost for materials. The only reason to make it yourself is that you have built a reputation on your own recipe, which means you don't need anybody else's recipe.

there are lots of reasons to prepare your own spaghetti sauce, not just because of a reputation, with the cost being comparable or less than commercial sauce. this may be someones first try canning a sauce, and they might want or need a recipe.

Maybe it would cost you more than pre-prepared sauce if you bought all IF you bought all the ingredients retail, but if you grow your own oregano, basil, marjoram, garlic, onions, tomatoes, and peppers homemade sauce is significantly cheaper, almost always tastes better, and has the benefit of being grown where you know what is in it and on it.
Looks like a good mix, Belle. Thanks for posting it. I usually just make large batches and can them at home, but this would be a nice thing to give as a gift, I think.

I have never found a store bought speghetti sauce (or restaurant either) that is any good. They have too many chemicals in them and there is no way to hide those chemicals when you are raised on sauce made from scratch.
There just is no comparison.

Saul, Saul, Saul, I grow my own herbs, meat, and tomatoes. This is much faster than simmering my homemade sauce for hours, like I usually do. I've been working all day and I don't feel like (or have the time to) make it, so I use this. It's still from scratch, just more convenient and, like Angel said, I know what's in it.
BTW, I cook ALL of our meals from scratch - no packaged food. We don't go to restaurants, either.

I never buy store bought sauce, it is full of junk and doesn't taste like I want it to.

I'm with yall too. I grow all my own ingredients right down to the spices and cook it all and can it myself. What it cost me is the price of the original seeds and a few new canning lids. All home made, no preservatives and tastes great! You can't buy that at the local store.:grin: Thanks for posting that recipe Belle!

I agree with most everyone here...:wink:
I feel that it is cheaper to make homemade sauce then buy that stuff from the store.
1. It tastes better.
2. If your on a special diet you can make it to your special needs...such as no sugar or salt etc.
3. It is always a very good thing to know how to cook from scratch because of the times to come.
4. A very good reason to not only make it but can it as well...you never, never know what is coming around the next corner in life.

Many of us here, do make our own everything Saul. i grow my mators, every thing that goes into my sauce, including meat. I am like belle, and many others.
I don't want to chance it with store bought crap. way to many chemicals in it for me. and who even knows if the meat would be good. I know mine is good.

About the preparation directions in the original post - I'm assuming that the "tomatoes, water and cooking times" section refers to whatever type of tomato product you have to hand?
This looks like a great mix, and I will be making up some for the house. DH and the girls aren't overly fond of spaghetti sauce, so it can be a waste to buy or can pre-made sauce. But, if I can up the tomatoes plain; having this mix on hand will make things much simpler the few times we do have spaghetti sauce.

Yes, that's right. That's one of the things I love about this recipe - I can use whatever tomato product is handy (or on sale). Also, it doesn't make a ton, so it's good for small families or sauce for a recipe. I'll be making a single recipe to pour over stuffed shells later this week.

8 cup sifted flour
1 1/2 cup powder milk
1 1/2 cup shortning
1/4 cup baking powder
1 tablespoon salt
Stir dry ingredients well then cut in shortning. Store airtight and cool. Will keep up to
1 month. Makes 10 cups of mix.
To make muffins:
1 cup mix
1/3 cup water
1 beaten egg
fill cups 2/3 full. Bake 20 min. at 425
To make biscuits:
2 cup mix
1/3 - 1/2 cup water
Makes 12 - 2" biscuits. Bake 12-15 min at 450
To make pancakes:
1 cup mix
1/2 cup water
1 beaten egg
Makes 6 4-5" Cakes

Belle, Thanks for the spaghetti Sauce Mix recipe, I too make everything pretty much from scratch. As you said, at least you know what is actually going into it!! :-) When I had my farm, I canned sauce from scratch and everything else too. No longer have the farm, but still grow pots of herbs and a few tomatoe plants, squash and the like. Once homemade, no store sauce is going to come close in flavor or health giving vitamins and minerals to my mind. Just my own opinion of course. But, we folks who know how to make do will certainly have nicer tasting meals while others are bored stiff with their store bought stuff. Bless you Belle and thanks.

You're welcome, AL. You know something funny? I've been making sauce from this mix recipe pretty often lately, so I thought I'd make a batch of spaghetti sauce from scratch the other day. I'm pretty well known, in some circles, for my spaghetti sauce. Everyone thought it was from a jar! Apparently, they like the flavor of this mix. Suits me - it's a whole lot easier!
