View Full Version : Goat Barn Floorplans?

I'm ready to switch to milk goats...
and as everyone who keeps animals know, it is better to build the facility first, rather than adapt and compromise on a temporary/semi-permanent unsatisfactory solution.
The problem: all the floor plans I'm finding, are either a cathedral to goat homage, or a primitive shack conducive to bad backs and cold drafts.
Does anyone have a plan that simply works?
I'm planning on two does, so I need a pen for kids, a pen for kidding, a milk parlor, a feed room, and a quarantine pen. I would like room above the pens for hay storage, that also acts as insulation.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Good call on building the barn before the goats! So many folks that we help get started in dairy goats plan backwards.
You probably know this, but plan on 16 sq ft for every 3 standard sized goats. We have two kidding pens that take up one 8x8 area, split into two sections. Our whole goat barn is built with 8x8 sections that can be divided or kept open. It's real easy to block off one or more sections for whatever the season calls for. My husband can give you more exact measurements but we have a hayloft above for 250-280 square bale storage. With two milkers and probably a few more by spring, you won't need a whole lot of room.
I'll have hubby give you more info and possibly send you a floor plan. We love our goats. They are the "poor man's cow" with almost non-existant vet bills and easy to handle. A real joy!
God bless,
Yooper wife.

well, I have a huge barn built long ago, for my hay, now each one of my pens, has a goat house. so the does have their own house, and the bucks have theirs ,far from that gals. and the younger ones have their own house.
all of my houses have dirt floor, witch gets about 3 bales of straw put down in the late fall early winter. and is added to as needed.
I have a pen, than is simply 4x8 panels, of ply wood, and one panel cut in half for the ends and a door, this is the birthing open. I usually take the babies before the mother sees them ,and I milk her.
Last year, I left the babies with the mothers for the first time. not a good thing to do. for me.
I have 2 does that are huge milkers, but the babies sucked on her hard. she lost so much weight. I have been feeding her, and helping her, since I took them off her, at 3 months back into shape, and will not probably breed her this year.
I like it better when I feed the babies. I get very healthy babies, and the moms stay nice.

Thanks, Yooper, I ordered some plans online.
Should give me a baseline on where to start and what to trim.
I like the idea of movable pens...would make bobcat cleanup a snap.
