the trip to the farm store

today I went to the farm store.
I got 2 50# bags of chicken scratch, and3 mineral buckets for my goats.
it came to 77 dollars and some change. getting alittle expansive I would say.

Ouch. Yeah, I need to scoot down to Wilco at some point in the next day or two... need to pick up chick starter before Thursday. It's running about $17 per 50# at this point.

Two years ago it was $12 per 50#.

I know. I'm trying to get ahead on everything (hay for the goats and rabbits, layer pellets and rabbit pellets, and chick starter -- plus dog and cat food (I think I have enough food for Juniper's goldfish for at least another year or two, LOL!). It's a SLOW process with prices being so high.

We picked up 100# of dry dog food for the two border collies, 50# of cat food for the one cat and 50# of layer pellets. That came out to just over $100 and we got "store brand" on all of it. The gold fish have two tins of food on the shelf so they are provided for, too. That should cover all the critters around here.

Someone gave us a 50# (cleaned weight) feral pig this morning so that will butcher out with some food for dogs. Probably a lot of broth as well, which makes good dog food if rice is cooked in it. I'm thinking the dogs will start eating a lot more people food. We can just make a bit extra of whatever we are eating and that might be their dinner as well.

We've reduced the chicken flock by two thirds so there's only about ten chickens left. Guess two more of them can go to freezer camp since we don't need more than one rooster. My neighbor has started putting vegetables and greens into her garden for chicken food, I may start growing chicken food too. Ours pretty much get fed free range, though. A bit of layer pellet in the morning for a snack but the majority of their food is bugs and grasses.

I been picking up dog food, 300 pounds at a time. i got to get more, because I am down to my last 50 # which is bad. I want to get about 6oo pounds. and I have to get goat chow, and chicken scratch, which is high very high.
