Does anyone know what little dogs freak out when there is a storm? What advantage in the wild would that give them? My dog goes absolutely crazy shaking when he feels one coming. He stays inside, I don't get it. Who out there has some good info? Also, if you must troll this thread make it funny.

My dog is terrified of squeek toys, thunderstorms, and brooms. When she was a puppy and my neighbor had her, she had some GI's over who thought it was funny to scare her with fire crackers. She ran under the porch to hide and they threw them under the porch to scare her. She lives up to her name, Sissy.
Also, I have a cat who hides in my bathroom cupboard everytime she hears thunder. So it's not just dogs.

Maybe it have to do with the high frequency sounds.
Or maybe animals are wired to know...
When it thunder's they can hear God Speaking.. We just don't hear in that frequency but animals can.
They know when God judgment comes... It will be a STORM!!!
... The coming storm....

We have three dogs right now and we've had more in the past.
Think about this: You are sitting in your living room and all of a sudden there is this great big BOOOOOOOOMMMMMMM! outside! You run to the windows but can't see what is happening!
The sky is clear the birds are twirping (after they cleaned themselves off a little bit) and cars are buzzing by. IOW, everything seems normal..............BOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMMM! There it goes again!
Are you going to go outside where the BOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMM! is happening or are you going to go hide......like way down in the basement or whatever?
Why would an animal that really doesn't understand what thunder is do anything but run and hide and shake?
Of course not all animals are afraid of storms but I bet most are.
We have this 16 lb Jack Russell that is fearless......except for loud noises like thunder and guns.
She will stand out on the patio deck in 50 MPH winds and do nothing but face the wind and SNIFF! She ain't 'fraid of no wind!
It's the unknown and the natural thing to do is hide.
That's what I'm gonna do if I hear what sounds like a lot of booms anywhere near me.

I have a seventy -- seventy-five pound mostly-English Shepherd and he's always been afraid of storms. It's an instinct to make them find shelter and get out of the bad weather, IMO.

I have 3 dogs, 4 cats, and have had this number, or more for many years, never had a one scared of storms or loud noises.
Friends' animals have been. I wonder if they don't pick it up from their owners...I love storms.

See that 160 pounds of laid back love sponge on my avatar? She is PETRIFIED of thunder storms. She and my Rottie cross run to Mama every time they hear thunder or guns. Go figure.

I always figured it is instinct. Back before domestication, as wild canines/lobos, thunder and lightening equaled trees falling and that equaled danger and possibly death, so the survival instinct says go to ground and survive. My wold crosses and German Shepards hid in the bathtub or the back of the closet. BUT they also let me know about an hour before the storm hits - they can "hear" it coming.

I believe it's the individual personality as opposed to any breed characteristic. Our Aussie shepherd and 2 toy poodles all hide from shooting noise. The Aussie(14) is/always has been scared of storms, but the 2 yappy little toy poodles are oblivious to thunder. Our last 2 toy poodles were oblivious to shooting as well. Just different personaltiies, just like us 2-legged animals.
