Anchorage police reported they had little information to go on after a motorist stopped and took several shots in an apparent attempt to kill a moose hit by another vehicle in the northbound lane of the New Seward Highway near O'Malley Road Saturday night.
According to police the first vehicle hit the moose shortly after 10 p.m.. No one was injured, though a passing Anchorage Fire Department ambulance did stop to check on occupants of the vehicle.
At one point, an SUV described by at least one witness as a maroon Suburban stopped and someone in the vehicle took several shots at the moose. The SUV then sped away before anyone could get a good description or a license plate number.
The shots failed to kill the moose and officers had to go out and dispatch it. The highway was closed for a few minutes during the incident.

Regardless of the circumstance, police said, it is illegal to discharge a firearm within city limits.
