Picture sparks claims of wood on Mars
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/scienceandtechnology/science/3544076/Picture-sparks-claims-of-wood-on-Mars.html
A photograph of the surface of Mars showing a mysterious object
The picture, which was taken as part of Nasa's Mars Exploration Rover mission in May 2004, has given excitable internet message board users reason to believe that a civilisation has formed on the planet.
Some of the more far-fetched theories over the object's identity range from a plank of wood to a giant flake.
However, Dr Jim Bell, an Associate Professor of Astronomy at Cornell University and the lead scientist in the development of the Rover project's cameras, has provided an alternative explanation.
He told the Universe Today website that "sadly" there was no wood in the picture, adding: "I say 'sadly' because personally I think it would be incredible and spectacular to find a wooden plank on Mars. However, in this case, it's just a trick of the lighting and the viewing angle.
He added: "What you're seeing is a piece of flat, platy, layered sulfur-rich outcrop rock ... Sometimes, like in this case, those flat, platy rocks have been tilted or dislodged, this one probably from the forces associated with the huge impact crater that formed nearby.
"And this one's being viewed edge-on. That edge-on view, combined with the layered nature of these rocks in general gives the surface a sort of grainy texture. So, indeed, it looks like a wooden plank on Mars."
While frozen water was discovered on the planet earlier this year, it is thought unlikely that conditions on the planet would allow for life to develop.

They seem desperate to prove that man wasnt created on earth in God's image for a purpose.
Any little speck or theory of 'alien' life or civiliation not on planet earth keep them like little 'Al Gores' fantasizing about agenda over science.

Hmmm and that could be some wood out in any desert or dried up lake bed on this planet! How do we know that that rover is actually on Mars?

It is quite obvious that it is a discarded railroad ty, which is an indication that they have had trains on mars and when they became unprofitable as they have on earth, they got rid of them instead of having the government fund them.

I am surprised that no one chimed in with the idea that this shows that being on Mars is part of Hollywood magic . Pics were taken after a wind storm blew through or something like that......

There's probably lots of stuff on Mars like buried ruins that have been there a long time.

Hello Kimberly,
Look at the very large pic above and then to the left of the log. You will see the "hot dog shape" there but larger. It is easier to see in the big picture. it looks like a cross or plus symbol with hash marks around it like a clock face.

Ok I'm just not seeing it but it's probably just me, say does anyone else think that stuff on the ground looks like vegetation? When will we be told that this was filmed in Idaho or Washington or better yet the petrified forest?
