Both fireplaces will be going starting this evening. We will be lucky to see above zero for a couple of days. The snow we got over the week-end was powder and with the winds that are coming with this, I expect us to have drifting early.

I hope you are ready in Michigan!

Never heard 'em called long handles.

We're bringing more wood up tonight that should get us through the week. What we wear here are flannel or fleece-lined jeans. It just doesn't getting any better than that!

I'm in upstate NY; the zero weather starts Wednesday morning for us.

OMG. Three days of it.

Saturday, the temps will bounce back up to a balmy 18 degrees.

Well in Northwest Arkansas it won't be AS cold but not fun. I just saw the update and our temps for Wednesday and Thursday have been dropped again. Our winds have been updated again. We are under fire danger watches and warnings then will move into dangereous wind chill warnings to go all with the fire danger. Fireplace is ready to go and mental shields ready for the teenage/college whining and wailing that is to come.

brought wood in yesterday stacked it higher than normal

got that heat gas line antifreeze in the truck,

got more straw in the dog house for the dogs

even dumped out extra wood shavings and filled the roost boxes up too for the chickens

even dug out my old snowmobile pants from yrs back(bought them back in 77, just in time for the blizzard of 78, actually had a lot of fun during that blizzard, thats another story) , you could sweat standing still in 0 weather with those yamaha brand pants, found the upper half coat too, no worries on being cold there,

now hopefully, it doesnt stay below zero like back in 81 or so, when it stayed below 0 for about a month remember that one?, had frost on my oil line all the way into the oil stove in the house,

seems the older I get , the more I really dislike winter

They tell people to bring the dogs inside in this kind of weather here, and will even give tickets and sometimes take your dog if you don't bring it inside. But the idiots here probably don't do things like put lots of straw down. Does it really keep them warm, Scruffy?

Just wondering.

I DO remember one winter in the early 80's....our septic lines froze and poor Hubby had to dig them out; it was a rental house and we had only been there a month or so, and when Hubby finally made ti to the septic tank, and pried off the lid, the thing was FULL to the brim. The Landlord wanted US to pay for pumping it out. Believe that was 81--our oldest was two and just getting potty trained. That was one cold winter.

A few years later when our youngest wasatiny baby, itgot so cold that the beams inthe cathedral ceiling creaked and groaned....and we didn't see the ground for MONTHS. It was sooo odd when the snow melted and we finally saw grass again!

the dogs Im talking about are my 2 outside dogs who are acclimatized , they dont go in and out,and are long haired well insulated labrador mixes

thier doghouse is a mcmansion doggy house, with 90 degree entrance, 2/3 full of straw, up off the concrete, with what you might call a porch, at the front,5x5 wood skid, they can lay out on that and not be laying on the concrete, in moderate temps, then all this is surrounded by pole barn style siding with a roof kennel, for stopping the wind, and, so no rain or snow comes down on them,

yes the straw really does keep them warm,

Wow, Scruffy, that's a doggy palace! LOL.

Hunybee, you can keep it. I don't do cold well myself. It's 9 out now, wind chill is -9. I guess you'd call that semi-tropical. :)

i might have said this here before, but where i grew up, the temps sometimes would have a big swing in the spring. we would get a lot of snow, and it take a long time to melt. so sometimes it gets in the 50's and there is still snow on the ground. people are out in their sandels and shorts. when it hits 60, THAT is tropical. no joke, we used lay out to get suntans when it got that warm in the spring.

for cryin' out loud. it's 60 in the house right now, and the kids are beggin' to run around in their unders

We've got the cold too. Only problem I have is one of my dogs. Miss Daisy our English Sheepdog (she's pretty big) has figured out how to open the patio at night and let herself in. Some nights she just plain refuses to come in. I woke up in the night and our bedroom was almost too hot to sleep in. Hubby gets up a lo and behold the door is open. The furnance had run non-stop. If only Daisy could learn to shut the door. Won't she be surprised when I lock her out tonight.

Our poor pooch (Golden Retriever/Chow) is still laying either on the carpet or his pillow, dreaming doggie dreams in the 72 degree inside the house temps....Except when he has to "potty' (Yes, he knows what that means!) and goes outside to become a "Pupsicle"....
Then back inside to sleep in the warmth....
And I have to go to work at 5:00AM every morning....^%#*&)(*!!!
