We are traveling next week. Eeep. I know, could the timing be any worse? But my husband needs to go to a meeting for work, and it is close to my family. I won't be able to see them again until this summer, if everything stays "normal". If it doesn't, then who knows.

We are traveling from SW PA to central NY. We leave Monday, and come back on Friday. There are so many possible scenarios that could come to pass within that timeframe.

I am getting several different sets of "back roads" directions to get back home, in case something shuts down the main highways. We are considering bringing extra gas with us, but we aren't sure about that at present. It takes a little more than one tank of gas to make the trip one way, going on the highways and getting the best gas mileage.

What else should we do to plan for this?

I'm on double shifts Tuesday,Wednesday, Thursday for training. Days/Midnights:sad:

Worst week I could think of to be in the city that much.

Know what you mean!!! We wanted to go to the Alafia Rendevous next week, but next weeks' possible events kinda put a damper on it for me. We almost decided to go, since it will probably be the last one they will have (with Obama hating guns and all that), but other elements got mixed into the pot and we decided not to go. They sure are having prettier weather there than here in IN, though.

I would make VERY sure the gas tank was topped off when you got to your destination. Make sure all the fluids are topped off and looking good, too. Keep a close eye on events and have a bug out bag packed with food etc ready to throw inthe trunk, and then enjoy your family. Lord knows when you will be able to do it again. And it just might be that NUTHIN' happens. You never know.

I am planning a 9 hr (one way) trip north of my current location in the next couple of weeks, too.
I will take a normal survival pack of warm clothes, food, water, make sure I have the normal sort of tools in the car, I just got triple A motorists coverage, and I will take extra cash.
If you need to, you can purchase extra gas containers at any Walmart.
I will also have alternate routes back mapped out.
Other than that, life goes on as normal. You really can't do any other planning unless you know what you are planning for.

Beaners, I wouldn't worry too much. Just go up to I-90, the NYS Thruway.
You'll be fine.

You need each a sleeping bag, and warm clotheing, besides what you intend to wear on your visit.
You need ice cleats on your snow boots, besides the shoes that you intend to wear.
You need a picnic for each travel day of the journey...besides the lunch you may plan to pick up on the way.
You need a coffee can, 24 hour candles and matches, to make a car heater if you get snow stranded. (crack your window)
You need studded snow tires, if you don't have 4x4. Carry a tow strap in case you slide off the road.
Top off the tank at half full every next exit.
Have cash with you. Also have some silver with you-in case.
You need extra ammo for whatever hand gun you carry.
You need a canteen of water, and a thermos of espresso.
You need your Fila Brasileiro riding shot gun.

I keep rock salt and a small aluminum shovel in my suv in the winter.

That's the way we usually go. We are thinking of taking the Penn Turnpike and 81 though. Something is going on with the thruway and the Seneca tribe right now, and I haven't been able to pay enough attention to know what exactly the status is currently.

We always have regular winter travel stuff in the car, even though we are unlikely to need it here it stays in the trunk. That sounds like it covers most of what people are recommending.

I sure wish we could have done this trip a week sooner though. Thanks everybody! :-)
