I got one egg yesterday, a little bitty one! (It's the first egg from my six-month-old Silkies.)

It's fun when your chickens start laying!

I asked DH - "so when do you think things will be bad enough to try chickens again," he turned pale and said, "not yet!"..

To be fair, we had a lot of problems with minks, foxes and weather. We also have neighbors we have arrangements with that if things go south, we get a couple of hens and a roster by riding or walking over. But still, I miss the little gals and all the fresh eggs. And I really miss a proud roster walking about telling the world how wonderful he is, there's something really satisfying about seeing such a strong and self-confident little being.

Not yet.....maybe it was just an accident...we can hope. But no other evidence of the crime being repeated....and we started them on the oyster grit today. Hopefully that will take care of the issue!

I love to see a happy rooster, too...and fat hens with fluffy backsides that look like ladies' petticoats when they run, LOL! We have had problem with possums, but Hubby has all the holes in the house stuffed up this time, and we bought TWO sets of locks for the door, to be installed SOON. We felt we needed to get them back up and running again, tho--We might very well have family over when the stuff hits the fan, and we needed to be able to have food available to them. Goats are next.

We plan to avoid goats, unless someone shows up here with a young baby and has problems nursing. That's because John Seymour (and our experience is) you can have a goat or a garden, its hard to do both. Its possible, but I've told Dh instead that if things get so bad that we are never going anywhere (we still travel some for re-enactment) then he can have the one cow he's always wanted. But I'll show HIM how to milk it and he can take over from there, he he...

I really would like to get the chickens going again this Spring, but the garden that went wild is a bit more urgent. I simply can't re-clear it on my own, the guys are much more interested in their medieval herb garden, which is very useful but I'd also like some carrots, peas, potatoes etc. I did convince DH that since onions were medical, perhaps he could grow some old fashioned varieties along with some leeks and he got real excited looking up old varieties and uses. So, if nothing else, the wheat and beans will have some flavor if I run out of my jars of dried onions and garlic (garlic is a traditional medicine too).

Now, if I can just think up a good medical use for a fresh chicken egg...hmmm lol
