Does anyone here raise tobacco? I was thinking of trying my hand at it.

Looking for hints and maybe some seed.

First batch was the spring of 2000 on top of a mountain in Eastern Washington. It grew great there ... never a bit of a problem.
I ordered the seeds from Santa Fe, NM and at that time they had four or five different types. This year only two. Not sure why the lesser number.
Anyway, harvest went well and I still have some seed and lots of leaves left sealed up and stored. I do not smoke and wanted only to try it and see if I could grow it.
Now, whether it was beginners luck or what but those plants were beautiful!
I started them inside in an old plastic cake container from the store, with potting soil. I then got lots of black pots and filled them with potting soil, placed everything on top of black plastic in a protected from the wind part of the garden. When the plants were about five inches tall and had two or three sets of leaves I transplanted them into the pots. I keep them watered and they grew like crazy. Out of twenty or so big black pots I only lost one or two single plants.
I had over sown the seeds when I started, never thinned them out and just transplanted a spade full into the big black pots! But they did great!
Now, down here in the SW the plants the next year, the plants with the same seed from the year before, did not do as good BUT they still grew and I did get leaves to dry!
But, after two years and me not a smoker I stopped growing it. I've already bought new seed for this year and will grow some this year.
Hope this helps!
Seeds of Change was where I got the seed in late 1999!

I've grown a bit too. Planning on starting some more next time I get a chance. If you can find plants near you, that's the easiest way to go. Sure, seeds can get you some cool types, but they can be a pain to get established. Getting used to growing it would probably be easier with professionally grown plants.

Tobacco is an amazing plant, simply amazing.

i am of the opinion that while growing from seed can be trial and error,as with any plant one should try and go that route to prepare for the possible eventuality that the ability to purchase plants may no longer be an option..
the same goes for collecting and saving your seeds.

They really are good people. I left out an variety I was ordering last year and so re-ordered and they figured it out and combined to save shipping without me asking.

Anyone in Tennesse or there abouts who wants to know more about tobacco, send an email to CAO cigars and set up a tour next time you're by Nashville. They are booked up through March due to SCHIPS powwows with their vendors, though. Went on a tour yesterday. Wonderful folks there too. Got a free cigar and watched a video about making cigars. I learned quite a bit.

Oh, it does matter. You can get as complex as you like there. Different soils do different things. Different heights on the plant add different flavors and strength. Put them in the shade vs full sun. Age them in different ways.

Also, remember that tobacco is all the same species regardless of variety, so if you're keeping seeds, you'll have to bag the flower head or risk cross-breeding.

All four of my varieties have sprouted. Teeny tiny little buggers. Hard to imagine they will grow up to six feet tall. It took them about a week to come out.

Cap, I followed the directions given by squeaks over at that other web site that you participated in a couple years ago. Seems like they knew what they was talkin 'bout.

The parts about just putting them on top of moist potting soil/ misting them every day a couple times. I think the most important part was covering the tray with either plastic wrap or them store bought clear plastic lids to keep the moisture in.

The seed man ordering page said the little buggers also needed light to sprout. I add one thing to all the above and use an old water bed heater
under my trays to keep them about 75-80 degrees while they're sprouting. Seems to improve the amount of seeds that actually grow.

Good luck

I did the same as squeeks said too and this time they are sprouting out. Got about a dozen of them so far. They need the misting every day ( i just use a spray bottle for that) and the light. I sat them on the window sill, south facing, and now they are popping up good. I am amazed though that those tiny seeds and plants will grow that big lol....

wow, never even thought aobut growing my own tobacco. WHich is reall funny since i drive by tobacco fields all the time.

One thing to remember, tobacco drains the soil of nutrients. So rotating your growing spot is important. The following year, instead of planting where you planted the last time, move it. This will allow the your soil to replenish its nutrients for the following year. Just keep going back in forth between the two spots each year. I know there is something else you can do/plant in the old growing spot that actually helps it heal, but I cannot remember. When hubby gets back form his business trip I will ask him. He is in the Nursery business <grin> and is constantly spouting out little tidbits of information all the time. I end up tuning him out a lot since it is non-stop shop talk with him. oops....does that make me bad????<innocent look>

Well Folks, I'm here to witness to ya that you can grow your own tobacco, and it smokes just like the store bought brands. I had my very own first smoke of organic grown tobacco cigs today, and it was great. DW said it smelled like pot, but I tell you, it was the real deal.

That was the trash leaves growing close to the ground that the bugs ate half of too.
Once them big foot an a half long leaves cure up, I'm talking Marlboro country.

I hope everybody else that's green in this venture, your tobacco is lookin good too. So much for the tobaccao tax.

That is wonderful! I really liked growing the plants. Never had a bit of trouble with them. I don't smoke but those that do really liked the mix I put together for them. I used the plants for the other garden plants as protection against bugs and such.
Again ... Congrads!

I have no idea how to dry the tobacco leaves, as I don't know who squeeks is but I was wondering if cut them up and put them in the hydrator to dry! Would that work?

no that won't work, the leaves are large, the plants get up to about 7 to 8 foot tall.
when you plant bacca, you start in in side. you dampen the dirt down a tad. then just pat the seeds, on top of the dirt, don't cover with dirt until it sprouts, an then you add dirt, a bit, then let it grow then at about 4 to 6 inches, you replant out side in the garden.
worked for me really well.
when close to harvest, you take the dry leaves and hang them to dry out good.
now never ever get in your bacca patch when the leaves are wet, if you brush up against them youwill get bacca poisoning. so watch what your doing.
you don't just put seeds in the ground like beans or corn they will rot.

I am notsure Canada has a long enough growing season for bacca. maybe with a green house.
