Companion Planting with Fruit Trees

I found this list tonight http://attra.ncat.org/attra-pub/complant.html (http://attra.ncat.org/attra-pub/complant.html) on companion planting but the one thing this list did NOT address was fruit trees. We have three pear trees, two crabapples and two cherry trees in our yard.

Most of my vegetable gardening is shade gardening due to a small lot and lots of trees. Does anyone know if incompatibility with fruit trees and vegetables? I know not to plant tomatoes etc., near the walnut trees (on the neighbors property).

Other trees on the property are Hackberry, Red Oak, Burr Oak, Amber Maple, Redbud, and Norway Maple and the five arbor vita's that neighbor has that butts up next our yard and hence our garden.

Beginner here...why can't tomatoes be near walnut trees?

well, never heard of veggies being bothered by veggies .but fruit trees might be botheredbywalnuts , if they are close to it .don't know just some thing I heard. but I will tell you this ,I have some apple trees, tht are very old, and they have walnuts pretty close to them. NOW I do't get apples fro mthese trees, they are well over 200 years old. but I have trees that are 50 years, that still produce.

Walnut trees put out a toxin that some plants can't tolerate. Since I can't remember what can go near a walnut tree, we just plant everything at least 50 ft from the tree.

There are a lot of cedar trees, both red and white, in my area, so apple trees do not grow at all.

I have Orient pear trees which seem to be immune to the Cedar Gall Rust and they do very well whenever I get lucky enough to get a crop not frozen out in the spring.

My flowering crab tree also seems immune to the Rust, but it is an ornamental and I haven't found a use for those tiny sour little rocks it produces.

Pacyderm.... I am thinking things like peas...the trees would be great for climbing on and peas would not be parasitical. Also lettuces, spinach, arugala because when done they could be turned under, nourishing the tree. Also anything with a longer taproot as it would help trees get water nutrients.

What I'm most interested in knowing is what is incompatible with the fruit trees.

Mom thank you for that bit on the walnut trees and your apple trees this may well explain why my pear trees have yet to put on fruit! Only one has had pears the other two don't even get blossoms. Everyone hates the tree maybe we can get the city to remove it (it's growing into the power lines etc.)

Kimberly, do some research on permaculture. Especially take a look at a book called Gaia's Garden (I hate the title, but the book has a lot of useful information). IIRC, there is info in there on the 'guilds' or groups of plants that can go under and around various fruit and nut trees. There's probably also information and lists on-line -- you could try searching for permaculture guild lists. Here are some links with info to get you started:
