PROVINCE ADVISES OF SEVERE RESPIRATORY ILLNESS IN MEXICO, SWINE INFLUENZA IN CALIFORNIA AND TEXAS

The Office of the Chief Provincial Public Health Officer advises that clusters of severe respiratory illness (i.e. respiratory illness that requires hospital care) are under investigation in Mexico. In addition, several human cases of swine influenza (a mild illness not requiring hospital care) are under investigation in California and Texas.

Further investigation is underway to determine if these cases are linked.

To date, there have been no reported cases of severe respiratory illness in Manitoba associated with travel in Mexico or the southern United States.

At this time, there is no evidence that travellers have had increased rates of severe respiratory illness.

As per usual, individuals who currently have symptoms of a severe respiratory illness (fever, new or increasing cough or shortness of breath) should contact their health-care provider. Any travel history should be provided to the health-care provider.

Manitoba Health and Healthy Living continues to work closely with the Public Health Agency of Canada, other provincial and territorial health officials, the regional health authorities and Manitoba health-care providers to monitor the situation, make decisions and share information.

For up-to-date information, visit the website at www.gov.mb.ca/health/publichealth. For health questions or more information on respiratory illness, Manitobans can phone Health Links–Info Santé at 788-8200 or toll-free at 1-888-315-9257.

The nice thing about Manitoba, you can call for a doctor to come to your home, free of charge (well..our taxes) of course!
