April 26 (Bloomberg) -- Russia suspended imports of all meat from Mexico and the U.S. states of Texas, California and Kansas shipped after April 21 on concern about the spread of swine flu, the country’s veterinary watchdog said.

The suspension also affects pork from Guatemala, Honduras, the Dominican Republic, Columbia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Nicaragua, Panama, Salvador, and the U.S. states of Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Georgia, Kansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Florida, the watchdog added in a statement on its Web site today.

Swine flu, known as the H1N1 virus, originated in Mexico where it has been linked to as many as 81 deaths.

Travelers arriving in Russia from the above areas will have meat products confiscated, the watchdog, known as Rosselkhoznadzor in Russian, said in the statement.

It's in the pork meat ?

I'm glad I follow God's dietary law.

No, it's not in the meat. They are just reacting to public perception of the word swine. You might get it from playing with live pigs, but not from eating well cooked meat, from what I have read - where's summerthyme, she seems to have a good grasp on this stuff?

Napolitano just said you can't get swine flu from eating pork... but
then went on to add they are " screening and testing livestock
for developments there."

I have to say that I am out of bacon. But the slices of Spam I had fried up confirmed that they avoided the swine flu by hitting the oil in my frying pan until just crisped on the outer sides.

Micah... well, I dunno what kind of "grasp" I have (although I thank you very much for the kind words), but good grief!!!

People! This is SO far beyond being "swine flu" it's not funny. Forget the pork- there haven't been ANY reports of virus in any hog farms that I know of (and I should see it... enough farm news via various specialized publications comes through here every month).

Do me a favor... don't lick your pork chops before you cook them! And if you have hogs... well, you probably already know that it's a good idea to wash your hands after handling them before you go and eat!

I'll tell you this: right now, I'd be quarantining hogs FROM people... not the other way around!
