Two provinces have swine flu cases: sources
The Canadian Press
April 26, 2009 at 11:52 AM EDT
TORONTO — Sources say Canada's first cases of swine flu have come to light, at different ends of the country.
They say Nova Scotia and British Columbia have both discovered cases of people infected with unidentifiable influenza A viruses, which are being tested at the National Microbiology Laboratory in Winnipeg.
Because swine flu is so new, most laboratories don't have tests to identify them, and they show up as untypeable influenza A when tests are run.
Sources say Nova Scotia has three cases, in people with a travel link to Mexico. Officials in the province have called a press conference for this afternoon
Sources say British Columbia has found a pair of cases but it is not yet clear if they have a link to Mexico.
No information is available on the health of the cases.
Federal authorities will hold a news conference later this afternoon.

Yeah, I'm not impressed. I'm only 25 miles or so (as the crow flies) from Nova Scotia, so I am watching this rather closely. Plus oldest daughter is supposed to go to Halifax on a choir trip this Thursday....she may not be going. Although she hasn't been told this yet..

TORONTO, April 26 (Reuters) - Canada reported its first confirmed cases of swine flu on Sunday among a group of students who recently travelled to Mexico.
Health officials in the province of Nova Scotia said the cases had been confirmed with tests at a national lab in Winnipeg and that the four students had now recovered.
"It was acquired in Mexico, brought home and spread," Dr Robert Strang, chief public health officer for the province of Nova Scotia, told a televised news conference.

HALIFAX, N.S. — Health authorities in Nova Scotia are confirming four cases of swine flu in the province.
The province's public health officer, Dr. Robert Strang, says the four infected people in the Windsor area are recovering from the illness.
All of them had what he describes as "mild" cases of the flu.
Sources say British Columbia has found a pair of cases but it is not yet clear if they have a link to Mexico.
Canadian officials are planning a briefing today in Ottawa on the swine flu situation, which the World Health Organization has declared to be a "public health emergency of international concern."
Mexico's health minister says the disease has killed up to 81 people and likely sickened more than 1,300 since April 13.

(Updates with confirmation of two cases in British Columbia, further details)
By Jeffrey Hodgson
TORONTO, April 26 (Reuters) - Canada reported its first confirmed cases of swine flu on Sunday at opposite ends of the country, with two cases in the western province of British Columbia and four in the Atlantic province of Nova Scotia.
Nova Scotia health officials said four cases among students who recently travelled to Mexico had been confirmed with tests at a national lab in Winnipeg.
"These cases are mild. No one in Nova Scotia has been hospitalized because of the illness. All those who have been affected are recovering. At this point we're not seeing severe cases like those occuring in Mexico," Dr Robert Strang, chief public health officer for the province of Nova Scotia, told a televised news conference.
"It was acquired in Mexico, brought home and spread."
A spokesman at the British Columbia Centre for Disease Control also told Reuters they had two confirmed cases. (With additional reporting by Allan Dowd in Vancouver)

Our turn in Florida is coming. The cruise ships that visit Mexico return on Saturdays and Sundays mostly.
We'll see cases by midweek I bet.

Actually I just heard that the kids who came back from Mexico weren't ill. It was other children in school with them who became ill. So I'm still not sure about the incubation period or how many people it's passed from.
I'm nervous about the possibility it made an appearance in our Church tonight.

Sorry to hear about the girl at your church!
Do you think the kids who were in Mexico were "carriers" of the virus then? I hadn't thought about the possibility that people could carry the virus without getting sick themselves.

I have to find out more from people who know this area better. My understanding is that the school is a prep school that's 45 minutes outside of town. The children who went to Mexico were carriers and (seemingly) that the flu passed through a few people in the past couple weeks. The variant is very mild here so it was diagnosed as just the normal flu.
I've been here a few days and I'd assumed it was my allergies being a bit crazy, happens every time I come back. Touchy throat and cough, fortunately watery eyes too.
Taking some Tagamet just to be sure and praying that the church incident was just a coincidence. The church I went to is at least an hour from that particular school.

UPDATE: Health officials say Canadian swine flu cases mild (http://www.metronews.ca/halifax/local/article/219184--update-health-officials-say-canadian-swine-flu-cases-mild)

Four cases of swine flu have been confirmed at a Nova Scotia school, among the first instances of the potentially deadly disease reported in Canada.
"It is a cluster of flu that we've been following at King's Edgehill school (near Windsor)," Dr. Robert Strang, Nova Scotia's chief public health officer, said Sunday. "There is no reason for the Windsor community or Nova Scotians to be overly concerned."
Students returning from an early April school trip to Mexico became mildly ill but did not report it. Two of the four currently ill students, aged 12 to 18, had been in Mexico but likely contracted swine flu upon returning to Canada.
"One of the challenges with this illness is that it has been so mild, many of the students can't tell us for certain if they were sick," said Dr. Gaynor Watson-Creed, Capital Health medical officer. About 25 students have been sick but most are better and the rest are recovering. None have been hospitalized.
"We have to remember that all the people we're seeing with swine flu in the United States and Canada are mildly ill," Strang added.
Mexican officials have confirmed 20 deaths from the virus, but warned the toll could be as high as 81. British Columbia announced two mild cases of the flu also Sunday.
"In Canada and the United States, it's demonstrating only mild illness, but because it's a new strain, there are a lot of unanswered questions and we need to take it seriously," Strang said. "If people have a travel history to an affected area and they are sick, they should stay at home and phone their doctor."
King's-Edgehill headmaster Joe Seagram later told reporters 17 students and four staff members are in quarantine. He also said classes will continue as usual, but for now, community activities on campus will be curtailed.
