Ohio Swine Flu Case Confirmed
9-Year-Old Has 'Mild' Case Of New Influenza Strain
POSTED: 12:41 pm EDT April 26, 2009
UPDATED: 1:06 pm EDT April 26, 2009
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- State health officials confirmed that the swine flu has made it to Ohio.Agents with the Ohio Department of Health announced that a 9-year-old boy from Lorain County has been diagnosed with the disease. (http://www.odh.ohio.gov/)Doctors said the patient has a mild case of the flu and that he is recovering at home.Because the latest combination of the influenza virus is still being analyzed, health agents are asking resident to take extra precaution against exposure. The ODH said that as with other emerging flu strains, there is no vaccine for the swine flu yet.“I urge Ohioans to be alert to information about this new flu,” said ODH Director Alvin D. Jackson, M.D. “In addition, the tried-and-true saying about washing hands and covering one’s cough remains sound medical advice.”Symptoms of this swine flu virus closely resemble seasonal flu, and include fever, weakness, coughing and lack of appetite.People should take preventative measures such as:
Covering the nose and mouth with a tissue when coughing or sneezing.
Washing hands often with soap and water, especially after a cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.
Avoiding close contact with sick people.
If sick with influenza, people are asked to see their doctor and the CDC (http://www.cdc.gov/) recommends that affected patients stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread this way.

How does a 9 year old get this in the middle of the country when there are no other cases (supposedly) in his area and he has not been to affected areas?
John is right. It will be everywhere very soon, if that is the case.

For those that don't know the layout, Lorain county is West of Cuyahoga county which houses Cleveland, OH. I'm just east of Cleveland.

Fairly good chance the boys parent(s) work in Cleveland, which means, yes, it's probably all over the state by now.

Just as a comment on the demographics in Lorain County, understand that there are more Puerto Ricans in Lorain County any other county except Dade (and that includes counties in Puerto Rico)...
There are ALSO a LOT of wet-backs who have come in from Mexico, so, families who may have come back from "home" may WELL have brought it with them.

I would be very surprised if it isn't in Columbus. As I've written on other threads, we've already got massive "Ohio Crud" going around, that cold-flu condition that settles down into the lungs and comes back several times.
I suspect that no one has thought to check for "swine flu" until now.
I also know that there are a number of people in this city who don't have insurance and wouldn't see a doctor, unless they passed out and someone phoned 911. They will also go to work, no matter what, and it's up to the supervisors to send them home, which some won't do because they're already running short-handed and they don't think it's their responsibility to "play doctor." And that was from a conversation I had with an assistant manager of a fast food joint who I ran into during my wanderings today.
Not that I've been eating out lately . . . but it would certainly make me rethink that activity.

Hey, Triv -- I started back on elderberry and oreganol. Ugh. My tongue hates me, but maybe it'll help.
Okay, how long will it be before they find a case in Franklin Co? I give it 24 hours. I slipped out to CVS earlier. People were coughing that crud cough. Blah. I was hopeful the bright sunshine and warm temps of the last two days would banish some of that crud.

You know, I felt guilty today for what I was thinking as we drove back home through a part of Columbus with a large hispanic population. I know from stopping at this place or that in the last year or so the service employees are almost majority hispanic in this area. It was shortly after I had gotten the twitter alert from CDC about the case in Ohio, but I didn't know where in Ohio the case had been discovered. I was thirsty but wouldn't even stop at a gas station or convenience store for a bottle of water until I got out of Franklin County because for all I know, one of the many hispanic clerks is hosting an illegal uncle in her home that had just rolled in from Mexico City a couple days ago. Or a customer in the store could be in that situation. This is going to affect how I think about people, and it is going to seem racist, but really, it isn't.

You point out a very real phenomenon, LittleFish. I will not be surprised to see reprisals against the Hispanic community if this flu gets out of hand.
After 9/11, a citizen here in Phoenix got upset when he saw a fellow in a turban, assumed he was Arabic, and shot him dead. The victim was, in fact, a Sikh, and one of the most friendly, charitable people you'd ever want to know.
People will behave poorly. You heard it here first.
FWIW, my DD is in a serious relationship with a young man whose Hispanic mother's family has been in the U.S. legally for at least three generations. My maternal grandfather, my paternal grandparents, and my father were all naturalized citizens. Young Man is more American than I am, if seniority counts. Yet he may be the target of violence or disdain.
What I would say is this: God and Jesus judge us as individuals, not as members of a group. Let's all copy God and Jesus.

cyberiot, your idea is different from mine. What I was asking for was a thread or sticky that could be updated of *just* the locations of where the flu is. Like...
Texas:
Dallas
San Antonio
California:
Nebraska:
Ohio:
New York:
Georgia:
Minnesota:
Massachusettes:
Kansas:
See? All a person would have to do is click on the thread and they'd know right off exactly where it is and exactly how hard it is hitting. It'd be like the sheet of paper the person is reading from while sticking pins in a map on the wall.
Edited to add:
Btw, did I miss any of the states that have a case of this swine flu?

have family in toledo. wood county is next door. one works in healthcare, other 2 in shipping/recieving and in college at UT.
my hubby is paramedic (24 years) and let me tell you, he is very concerned going back to work tomorrow. works several large cities and counties. 24 hour shifts and steps into all the carp. what are ems people here? nurses? etc? any updates from your companies on this?
son went on week long visit with my ex before easter. his dad flies all over world as job. 2 days after he got back he was very sick for a week. the kid is very healthy, never gets sick. homeschooled in rural area. he was sick with first a cold, then the nasty respiratory thing. never got the high fever.
how many people are or have been ill with this but didn't go to doc? so i'm thinking alot of it has not been reported or documented due to that.
thing is, alex is right, we have flu every year and what gets people are the complications from it. so why the upped concern?
just early morning thoughts..

Suspected swine flu case surfaces in Butler County; Ohio has 3 confirmed cases
OSU also reports that a freshman has a suspected case, awaiting CDC confirmation.
By Tiffany Y. Latta and Margo Rutledge Kissell
Staff Writers Updated 1:45 AM Sunday, May 3, 2009
Health officials announced Saturday, May 2, that there is a suspected case of swine flu in Butler County.
Health department officials from Butler County and Middletown said Saturday the case did not originate with their agencies, and a Hamilton health official could not be reached. Officials with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said they would release details about the individual only if a case is upgraded to probable or confirmed. A previous suspected case in Butler County was ruled out last week.
The announcement of the suspected case in Butler County came the same day the Ohio Department of Health confirmed three cases of H1N1 Flu in Ohio.
The two new cases in Franklin County involve two men, ages 31 and 33, and were in addition to the previously confirmed case involving a 9-year-old Elyria boy.
Officials in Warren County continue to wait for test results on a Springboro High School student suspected of having the H1N1 virus.
Springboro Community Schools Superintendent David Baker said Saturday that classes will be held as normal “unless the test comes back positive.”
“We don’t anticipate any changes right now. We’re certainly hoping it doesn’t come back positive,” said Baker, who doesn’t expect results to come back this weekend.
The female student recently took a trip to Cancun, Mexico. When she later developed flu-like symptoms, her father asked that she be tested, Baker said.
The suspected cases in Butler and Warren counties were two of eight in southwest Ohio, including two in Hamilton County, three in Montgomery County and one in Greene County.
Ohio State University reported a male freshman has a suspected case and is awaiting CDC confirmation. The student — who was exposed to the virus by family members also suspected to have the H1N1 flu — was moved from his Stradley Hall dormitory and is being isolated and monitored, university officials said.
The state health department also reported two probable cases — a 39-year-old woman in Holmes County and a 39-year-old woman in Portage County. Probable cases have preliminary tests indicating an Influenza A infection but confirmatory tests are needed to determine whether the person is infected with H1N1, commonly known as swine flu, the department said.
Statewide, 40 suspect cases await testing, the department reported on its Web site.
Nationwide, the CDC increased the number of confirmed cases to 160, up from 141. As of Saturday afternoon, the World Health Organization reported 658 confirmed cases in 16 countries.
Symptoms of the swine flu virus closely resemble those of the seasonal flu and include fever, weakness, coughing and lack of appetite.
Area health officials are urging people to remain calm and use basic precautions such as washing hands, covering the mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing, and stay home if you’re sick.

Staff Report Updated 2:38 PM Tuesday, May 5, 2009 BUTLER COUNTY —The Ohio Department of Health announced Tuesday, May 5, they are monitoring probable and suspected cases of swine flu in Butler County.
The probable case of swine flu is described as a 30-year-old Butler County man, according to local and state agencies. He is one of two probable cases in the state along with an 18-year-old Franklin County man.
The suspected case in the area is a 53-year-old Middletown man, who is one of 37 suspected cases statewide.
Nationwide, there are 403 confirmed cases of swine flu, including five in Ohio. The Ohio Department of Health confirmed two new cases of the virus Tuesday, May 5 in Holmes and Portage counties. The other confirmed cases are in Franklin and Lorain counties.
In a written statement, Butler County Health Department officials said they were notified of the probable case in the area Monday afternoon.
Officials are now awaiting results from the Centers of Disease Control.
Probable cases are those in which people exhibit symptoms, likely had contact with the virus and tested negative for seasonal flu.
Jackie Phillips, Middletown Health Department’s nursing director, said the 53-year-old Middletown man recently visited California and is showing “acute respiratory symptoms.’’
Phillips said local authorities should learn the results of the cases in about a week.
Suspected cases are people who have symptoms and may have had contact with swine flu virus.
A total of 134 suspected cases have dismissed.
