Oh I love my odd green rhubarb! I have a couple of older red plants and I try to stick a couple of stalks of that in with the pie filling so it looks like rhubarb!
I think I'll get one more pie; it's already going to seed. We had 90 degree heat here last week.
The howling success this year is I made a batch of rhubarb orange marmalade. To a basic rhubarb jam recipe I added the juice and pulp from two navel oranges and a couple of tablespoons of finely grated orange rind. This cooked up a bit thin so I added 2 teaspoons of powdered pectin, and that thickened it up without turning it into a rhubarb brick! The orange flavoring really enhanced the rhubarb!

Wow!
My rhubarb is just starting to peek above the dirt! I like making stewed rhubarb for my brother. He thinks it's the greatest thing. I usually add some strawberries to it.

Oh...yum..I miss rhubarb...we had it in abundance in Norway, but alas in our part of Texas it won't do well. But we occasionally find it in the frozen produce...:-D
Anyone know of a heat tolerant variety???? (Fat chance!)

Been harvesting for a week here now! So far this year no one has swiped my rhubarb patch, fingers crossed.

Is color related to age? My rhubarb is 2 years old and gets just the slightest hint of red. I was thinking that this was a nutrient issue but the stalks are thick and plentiful and the foliage lush.

I wondered what was that green rhubarb when it first started coming up. Apparently rhubarb comes in red and green; red varieties being more popular. I'm trying to raise a couple more little red plants, hoping they'll be dominant genes and cross pollinate with the green or something.
Birdlady, I grew up in SoCal and we always had rhubarb- there must be a variety for hotter weather. Maybe a nurseryman in your area would know.

Can I grow rhubarb, here in Oklahoma? It gets hot and humid in the summer and as low as in the teens in winter. Think it will grow?

Victoria is the variety that is green and tart. But if does get some red on it. Just add a little food coloring is you have to have red.

Raspberry rhubarb jam!! That sounds delicious!
My rhubarb is going to have to be moved. The spot it's in is just not right for it.
Indigo (who is drooling over the thought of that jam....)

yaya, you SHOULD be ok if it'll handle the heat. We had a 20 foot patch where I grew up (though it was in the shade of a lot of trees) and our lows were generally below zero in winter...

I have been given a Fall gift! Was outside yesterday looking things over, and there are several nice stalks of rhubarb going strong. That's a surprise because it usually dies back over the Summer. I think I've got enough out there for a couple more pies, with no ill effects on the plants. Sweet!
