My book at lulu.com might be worth a download (shameless commercial plug). It's called Deep Winter....which seems to be gaining readers by the day....

I loved Deep Winter, read the first time for fun, the second time with a notebook and pen in hand, taking notes like a wildman.
Thanks for writing it, btw.

I'll second the great read that "Deep Winter" is. Also the companion "Shatter" is just as good! If you have never read them, they are right up there with "Lights Out". Well worth the time and money to get it and read it. One story you will most likely read over more than once!

The star is, of course, "Alas, Babylon" by Pat Frank
"Ariel: A Novel of the Change" Steven Boyette
"False Dawn" Chelsea Quinn Yarbro
"Damnation Alley" Roger Zelazny
Movies:
Red Dawn
On the Beach
The Mad Max series
Damnation Alley (based on the book, but nothing similar in plot)

Well, that's strange. The link to Triple Ought worked for me the other day, and now it doesn't. Glad I read it all in one sitting, or I'd be having withdrawls about now.
Shewoff, do you know if it's the same basic story as Patriots? I haven't read that one either, but it seems like I remember hearing that he had written a shorter version previously.

"Patriots" started off as The Grey Nineties, and morphed through a couple of iterations into it's present form. I think it's been updated a couple times with new chapters, tweaks to early chapters, to keep it current.
It's a good read, but I actually liked the early versions better, for reasons that become apparent when one reads beyond about chapter 20. It is though, worth the money.

You can email me your zip code, and I can estimate shipping on Deep Winter and the new one, 'Shatter'. DW is 23.95 plus shipping, and I'm not sure yet what Shatter will be....although I will know within the next few days.
The third installment is progressing painfully slowly, but it'll be done later this year.
Thanks for your interest!

Actually, both Shatter and DW are available from me for $30 apiece, shipped, and autographed. DW's printing and shipping prices to me went up, and I've had to bump up my price a little. Still about ten bucks less than Amazon or lulu....

Within the last two months I read both "Deep Winter" and "Shatter". Both books are excellent reads in my opinion.
The compounding threats that the characters face, keep the story multi-dimensions and constantly changing.
I feel that what sets these types of works apart is the "every man" approach, in these stories you will find both the prepared and unprepared. What you will not find in any individual character, or for that matter, any combination of characters, that have all of the answers, gear or resources to "go it alone".
Even within the framework of fictional stories, I find it both frustrating and tedious to have a story require such suspension of disbelief that any one individual or family group would have virtually unlimited resources, skills and knowledge to succeed in a true survival scenario.
I look forward to the third installment, hopefully in time for Summer Vacation reading.

The ASHES series by William J. Johnstone is being reprinted. Bill died I think about a year ago, but he was good at such scenarios. Some of his later stuff like the Border War series is thought provoking as well.
The scariest piece of fiction I've seen to date? CALIPHATE. I looked at it yesterday in Books A Million. As Europe falls to liberalism, and people stop having families in favor of homosexuality, Islam takes over. The only Christian nation left is the US.
CALIPHATE gives a frightening look at what Europe and much of the rest of the world could become if we're stupid enough to let the Muslims take over. It's a Master/slave world, highly feudal in substance. Looks like a great read.

CALIPHATE is written by Tom Kratman. Check it out...if you dare. It's well written and Kratman has a good idea of what could happen.
Imagine Muslims being in charge. Not a Muslim? Then you get second rate status as a dhimmi. You can't own a vehicle. You are basically a slave. Your female children can be taken by Islamic people to be slaves, sexual or otherwise. Your sons forced into Janissary service.
America is the bright light of the whole book, but the America of the book is not the United States of America. It's an North American Union type America. Mexico, the US and Canada have been joined into what Kratman refers to as 'The Empire'.
I found the book entertaining and well worth the read. I look forward to reading more of it.

Read this this weekend. It is worth reading. Different parts of the country will handle events differently. I would also recommend Solar Flare by Larry Burkett.

I do consider this one light reading but there are so good things in here. I saw the effects of what was considered a 'minor' flare in the late 90s and wonder what happens when the Sun becomes active.

Steve Sterlings latest novel in the "Dies the Fire" series is out and it is very good. I got it as an e-book from Fictionwise but I'm sure it is also at the shops. My friend Diana is written into it (I studied Viking stuff with her for five years) as a very, very old women and of course a different name. She worked with Steve on that part of the book but the whole thing is very good. I love how rather than just stopping with the modern world has ended, he's not trying to take his alternate earth into the second generation after the disaster and how North America (and the world) might look and how people would live.
You can find it at:
http://www.fictionwise.com/ebooks/b93457/The-Sword-of-the-Lady-/S-M-Stirling/?
eBook Description: The New York Times bestselling author continues his "epic of survival and rebirth" (Library Journal), chronicling a modern world without technology. Rudi Mackenzie has journeyed far across the land that was once the United States of America, hoping to find the source of the world-altering event that has come to be known as The Change. His final destination is Nantucket, an island overrun with forest, inhabited by a mere two hundred people who claim to have been transported there from out of time. Only one odd stone house remains standing. Within it, Rudi finds a beautifully made sword waiting for him--and once he takes it up, nothing will ever be the same?
