Not exactly a barnyard problem. But we got a ten week old kitten three weeks ago. She was weaned not even with mom when we got her. We have three dogs one a female cockapoo. Well last week we found the kitten with the cockapoo nursing. The cockapoo is treating her just like one of her puppies, and now she has milk. Ive heard of dogs adopting orphaned kittens and vice versa, but this kitten is well past the need for milk. She is well fed too. spoiled if youy ask me. My question is will this hurt the kitten or the dog? Should we even try to stop this or will it stop on its own??

It should stop on it's own. Nature has a way of taking care of that. But at the very least, I'd get pictures!

I wouldn't worry about it...like Liberty says, it will adjust itself as the kitten gets bigger. Some cats will nurse kittens until they are HUGE... almost full size. I suspect it's more a comfort thing than anything...

We had a woven "thermal" blanket which for some reason triggered several of our house cats into nursing behavior. I have no idea what it was about that particular blanket, but they'd suck on it and knead it with their paws! Never saw it with any other blanket, either...

We have a young male cat who "nurses" on his brothers...if they will let him. He just sucks on their fur and makes biscuits on them with his claws. He will grow out of it as he gets older I am sure. (He was taken from his mother probably too soon.)

This is really a very good thing, because a three week old kitten who had to be weaned early is going to be lonely. Being adopted by a small dog with puppy brothers and sisters should provide emotional support, even if the kitten is older. It many even keep her from nursing the bathroom rug when she's fifteen years old and an elder cat.

Even if she is still nursing the dog as an adult and the dog does not mind, there is no problem. We had a spayed former mother cat that used to nurse her fully grown nice and nephew. It was very silly, seeing two adult cats nurse on a third one, and the fact that she was not even their mother made it even funnier.

And yes, get cute pictures, they will be great "awe" moments.
