View Full Version : Trying to find 100% wool socks

I can find wool tights (expensive, but I can find them), but most of the time, during the winter, I am home and indoors. So tights can be a bit "much", even with the heater turned down to 60-65. But socks are a must. And my last good pair of wool socks died late last winter.

I don't like cotton. The "wool" socks in the hunting/sporting good departments at Wally World are blends--I don't like blends. I just want some simple, 100% wool socks.

Short of making my own (something I don't know how to do, and have too many projects on my plate right now to get started on), well, do any of *you* have any good resources of wool socks for ladies? I want natural colors, or black, or something simple and easy. I don't mind hand washing, I'll be doing that to my shawl often enough.

But I need some good, verified, resources for these doggone things...

Grumble.

Rachel (who has cold tootsies right now and could really use a good pair of woolies...sniffle)

There's a site called Etsy.com where people sell their crafts. You could try there to see if someone has any for sale. I would have thought a store like LL Bean or Sierra Trading Post, but no- all I saw were blends.

I knit and come to think of it, the highest percentage I've worked with in sock weight yarn is about 90% wool. They add nylon for a nice stretch and I think it helps them last longer.
Lots of yarn suppliers sell "pure merino" which is nice soft wool, but heavier than sock weight.

I got DH some in person at Sportsman's Warehouse and we ordered some from rei.com. Good luck.

I wonder if I can find some wool yarn? I crochet socks often so I would like to try that.

Go to the Marketplace....hear Sir Vival's got wool socks for sale there....

Sir Vivals are a blend too.

Oh, I understand the 'need' for stretch. I just don't want the other fibers in there. LOL. Yeah, its bad of me, I suppose.

I've checked out Etsy for yarn, but didn't (DUH!) think of looking for already made socks, lol. Thanks for the reminder!

I got my pair at Eddie Bauer, back in, oh, the fall/winter of 1994. Before I went to Germany married to DH. LOL. Ah, those socks saw a lot of winters...but they lived out their very useful life, and died a painful death in OK. Poor things... ;-)

Socks don't "have" to be made with sock yarn. They can be made with different weights. There are 100% yarns in the same weight as sock yarn. The nylon in sock yarn makes them wear better around the heels and toes. One way to compensate in all wool yarn is to knit those areas with a twisted stitch. Maybe Disastercat or another experienced sock knitter can explain that better.

LOL--I know how to knit, but just barely. No, really. I'm a one-stitch wonder...

As it is, I need to finish my shawl pronto, as winter is coming on and I have got to get some other projects going...

I'll have to check out the various places ya'll mentioned, though...

We buy wool socks at the sporting goods stores like Gander Mountain, Cabelas, REI, Dicks Sporting Goods, Bass Pro Shops, etc.

All of them have websites that you can order from. Just a matter of finding what you want. They're pricey, but very high quality. Ours have lasted us for several years.

Nah, they're a blend. I *really* don't like blends. Try to stick with all natural fibers (cotton, linen, silk, hemp, wool...ykwim).

Thank you so much, grower! I'll be perusing this link more thoroughly in the coming days (do wish that they had the wool bottoms for their long underwear, though)...

A lot of those places sell blends. Even the ones that say "Wool socks", check the fiber content. Mostly nylon, sometimes acrylic, etc. They do it for stretching, wear issues, etc. Personally I think some wool/silk blend ones would be nice. I'd like some tights like that, too. Doubt I could afford more than one pair at a time, but I'd be warm waiting for the other pairs to arrive, lol!

I found a couple of small scale manufacturers--don't know if the one has any left, but this one looks to be doing good business, and it seems to be a place many TOLers would be interested in supporting...

Oh--the wool comes from the dd's flock of sheep, no pesticides, etc, their homeschoolers, etc. ANd, best yet, they are reasonably priced $12/pr.

Okay--don't go to the email, go to the website! LOL

I just got off of the phone with the wife/mother...they are still selling their socks, they've got more coming in in the next week or so. The 4-6 size will fit up to an 8, if you like them tighter, but sloppier, go larger.

:-)

Just remembered...a manufacturer in NC...if they're still in business...is called Thorlo. Visit their site: http://www.thorlo.com (http://www.thorlo.com/) They also sell seconds but you may have to ask about those. As for 100% wool...not sure. They have really nice socks.

100% wool. The price isn't half bad, either.

I've bought socks from The Sock Company for years. They are good people to deal with. They have a huge selection of socks, so you may have to hunt for a while but I did find these.

Mohair (angora goat) can replace nylon to prevent wearing out of toes and heels. Avoid merino for socks as it is simply not a durable wool fibre (fibres are too short, will pill and abrade). There are many yarns combining mohair and wool which would make a durable sock yarn.

I got the socks I ordered from the family business---niiiiiiiice. Wearing a pair now. Feet are warm without being overly so. I wear a 9ish (ladies) but got the 4-6 size (sizes are given in Men's, I believe), and they fit comfortably.

VERY nice company. I talked to the owner for a while on the phone, and I really liked her. Being a family run business, it seems worthwhile to support them as much as I can. And they are very Christian, if that helps anyone else (always nice to be able to support a brother or sister :-D).

If you have a Walgreens near you, they have a bin of very nice wool socks on sale. 100% wool, very soft, and they are in 2 packs at 2 / $10 - which means 4 pairs of wool socks for $10! You can't beat that!

And best of all, they are made in the USA - that's hard to find these days.

Okay, Ya'll, these aren't cheep, but they are guaranteed to be the warmest socks you have ever worn.
Buffalo and Cashmere. Buffalo is warmer than wool, and believe it or not the cashmere blended in makes these less expensive.
http://www.paradisefibers.net/Buffalo-Gold-Lux-Socks-p/47395.htm

The buffalo fiber is a by-product of the meat industry and the yarn is made here in the good old USA. I honestly don't know if the socks are or not, but I have met the owner of Buffalo Gold and form talking to him I'd bet he found a place in country to make them, but I cna't say for sure.
