i have a friend with a bladder infection who just called
asking me to surf up a home remedy for it.
they are w/o insurance right now, & ,they just flat out
dont have the $ up front for (how many?) doctor visits.
i did find one site that said 'yogurt in large amounts'.,
and gave a list of herbs, but no formula .
im a googlein but so far keep finding ads and not
an actual formula or recipe .
any ideas ?
thankyou

Boy, you'd 'think' that there would be SOMETHING out there other than antibiotics for UTI's.
How did people of 100 years ago (or more) deal with this?

Sorry I am so late getting to this thread. Solookup, how is your friend. Cranberry juice, until you are floating in it is the best non antibiotic remedy I know. Lots of water will help too. Basically the idea is to extremely dilute the urine and change the ph of it with the cranberry juice. Hence the floating off on a sea of cranberry juice solution.

Hey, I'm kinda late getting to the thread, too. But here's what I do when I believe I have a kidney infection...drink lots and lots of beer. And no, you don't have to drink so much at one time you get drunk. You can stretch it out over a bit of time. While the alcohol kills the infection, all that liguid flushes out the system. And the buzz can actually make it a somewhat 'enjoyable' experience.
But, it *does* work.

Well I'm super late to reply to this thread, but there is an over
the counter med in the vitiamin, herbal section of every drug store,
that is called AZO tablit's it costs under $6.00 for a box.
And it works great just follow the directions on the back of the box.
This works for UTI's, Kidney, and Bladder infections.
Hope this will help whoever it was that needed the info,
and if I was to late then maybe will help someone else.

just a tip on drinking juices for bladder infections.
Plain ol' cranberry juice is LOADED with sugars and sugars feed the infection. If you're going to drink juice, try juicing it yourself, or get organic, LOW, LOW sugar. Speaking from experience and health professional advice I'd been given.
jmho though.

One problem.. AZO is simply a urinary *anesthetic*... very useful in the painful stages of a bladder infection, but it does *nothing* to cure the problem.
Cranberry definitely will work for most... look for pure juice, (not "juice cocktail") and as obleo mentioned, try to avoid the highly sweetened juices.
For preps (when you can't get a doctor or get a prescription filled) you may want to know there is an antibiotic available for birds which is the exact same thing as Bactrim... a sulfa which works specifically on urinary tract infections. Certainly not something I'd suggest to someone who has access to medical care, but if they don't, (and especially if they've had this problem before and were prescribed Bactrim for it... so they know they don't have allergy problems) it might be worth having on hand.

If someone were to get antibotics from some source it would be a good idea to google that drug and get the correct dosing information. Just sayin :D
Cranberry juice will work in large enough amounts. Im talking a half gallon of the stuff for at least 7 days. Believe me you will not like cranberry juice afterward.

Alcohol is the worst thing in the world for your kidneys.
Drink cranberry juice and eat high-acid foods. The acid in cranberry juice kills the bacteria.
Also, don't "hold it." That just leaves the bacteria in there to ferment.

Janetn,.. yep, which is why I didn't really suggest they buy it... unless, of course (like many who have suffered these infections frequently) they know they aren't allergic to the stuff AND that it's the correct antibiotic for their problems.
That said, I HAVE seen bladder infections which cranberry didn't touch. And one reason the AZO suggestion makes me nervous is that it numbs the symptoms but doesn't touch the infection... meaning someone may be getting worse- or developing an infection "upstream" as the bacteria spread to the kidneys... but not realize it because the worst of the burning pain has been numbed.
And a KIDNEY infection can kill you.
If you think you have a bladder infection, but also have fever, chills, pain in the lower back or any sign of blood in the urine... DO NOT treat this at home unless you literally have no choice. A doctor's visit and antibiotics are cheap compared to the extensive (and potentially lifelong) treatment if you sustain kidney damage through waiting.

Just adding that BLUEBERRY juice works as well as cranberry juice... and tastes a ton better...
from a mom of four girls... we do this a LOT. :?

I take cranberry capsules, and drink a ton of unsweetened orange juice. the acid from the orange juice kills it. usually.
but if you get blood in the urine, or lower back pain, with fever, hit the doc's office fast. Kidney infections can kill you fast.
and drink a ton of water.

Don't try to 'flush' your system with massive quantities of plain water if you're not used to drinking it. You can make yourself sicker because it throws your electrolytes out of whack.
Don't drink more than that "8 glasses per day" if you never drink 8 glasses regularly.
