Pope Francis has decided to authorize pilgrimages to Medjugorje, which can now be officially organized by dioceses and parishes and will no longer take place only in a private capacity which as has so far been the case. The announcement was made today during Mass, at the parish shrine which has become a destination for millions of pilgrims, by the Apostolic Nuncio Luigi Pezzuto in Bosnia-Herzegovina and Archbishop Henryk Hoser, the Holy See's Special Apostolic Visitator.


Pilgrimages do not authenticate known events

The "ad interim" director of the Holy See Press Office, Alessandro Gisotti, responding to journalists' questions about the announcement, specified that the papal authorization must be accompanied by "care to prevent these pilgrimages from being interpreted as an authentication of known events, which still require examination by the Church. Therefore, care must be taken to avoid creating confusion or ambiguity from the doctrinal point of view regarding such pilgrimages. This also concerns pastors of every order and level who intend to go to Medjugorje and celebrate or concelebrate there even in a solemn way".


Pastoral attention

"Considering the considerable flow of people who go to Medjugorje and the abundant fruits of grace that have sprung from it - continued Gisotti - this authorization is part of the particular pastoral attention that the Holy Father intended to give to that reality, aimed at encouraging and promoting the fruits of good".

The apostolic visitator, concluded the ad interim director, "will have, in this way, greater ease in establishing - relations with the priests in charge of organizing pilgrimages to Medjugorje, as well as, safe and well-prepared persons, offering them information and indications to be able to fruitfully conduct such pilgrimages, - in agreement with the ordinary people of the place.”

The Pope's decision comes a year after the appointment of Hoser, Archbishop Emeritus of Warszawa-Prague in Poland, as "Apostolic Visitator for the Parish of Medjugorje, on May 31, 2018.

Both that nomination and today's announcement do not, therefore, enter into doctrinal questions relating to the authenticity of the account of the six visionaries of what has happened in Medjugorje since June 1981, a phenomenon that has not yet been concluded.Of the six visionaries, at that time children or young people, three assure us that they still have a daily apparition of the "Queen of Peace", always at the same time in the afternoon and wherever they are: they are Vicka (who lives in Medjugorje), Marija (who lives in Monza) and Ivan (who lives in the United States but often returns home). A fourth visionary, Mirjana, says that she receives an apparition every month, on the 2nd, while for the last two this happens once a year.

Our Lady began appearing daily to a number of children on the feast day of St. John the Baptist in 1981. As of this writing, she is continuing to appear to the visionaries, but no longer on a daily basis to each of them. She has been appearing in Medjugorje for over 20 years [At the time of this writing in 2000]. Our Lady stated that her appearances in Medjugorje would be her last in the world. By and large her messages have emphasized conversion, prayer and fasting. By the end of her apparitions in Medjugorje, each of the visionaries will have received 10 secrets. There are to be 3 warnings, which one of the visionaries, Mirjana, is to tell a priest 10 days in advance. The priest is to fast and pray for 7 days. Three days before their scheduled occurrence, the priest is to publicize the predictions.

On November 6, 1982, Our Lady stated:

Father Tomoslav Vlasic sent a letter to Pope John Paul II on December 16, 1983, summarizing a conversation with Mirjana (one of the visionaries) on November 5, 1983, concerning messages she received in an apparition on December 25, 1982:

The following is a summary of the substance of her account, without word-for-word quotations:

• Mirjana said that before the visible sign is given to humanity, there will be three warnings to the world. The warnings will be in the form of events on earth. Mirjana will be a witness to them. Three days before one of the admonitions, Mirjana will notify a priest of her choice. The witness of Mirjana will be a confirmation of the apparitions and a stimulus for the conversion of the world.
• After the admonitions, the visible sign will appear on the site of the apparitions in Medjugorje for all the world to see. The sign will be given as a testimony to the apparitions and in order to call the people back to the faith.
  
• The ninth and tenth secrets are serious. They concern chastisement for the sins of the world. Punishment is inevitable, for we cannot expect the whole world to be converted. The punishment can be diminished by prayer and penance, but it cannot be eliminated. Mirjana says that one of the evils that threatened the world, the one contained in the seventh secret, has been averted, thanks to prayer and fasting. That is why the Blessed Virgin continues to encourage prayer and fasting: "You have forgotten that through prayer and fasting you can avert war and suspend the laws of nature."
  
• After the first admonition, the others will follow in a rather short time. Thus, people will have some time for conversion.
• That interval will be a period of grace and conversion. After the visible sign appears, those who are still alive will have little time for conversion. For that reason, the Blessed Virgin invites us to urgent conversion and reconciliation.
  
• The invitation to prayer and penance is meant to avert evil and war, but most of all to save souls.

And there were given to the woman two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the desert, unto her place, where she is nourished for a time and times, and half a time, from the face of the serpent. And the serpent cast out of his mouth, after the woman, water, as it were a river: that he might cause her to be carried away by the river. And the earth helped the woman: and the earth opened her mouth and swallowed up the river which the dragon cast out of his mouth." (Rv. 12:13-16)

(NB: the Greek word eremos (which means 'wilderness' or 'desert') was used in both instances above, but the translator chose to use 'wilderness' in one place and 'desert' in another.

It is a fact that the authors of the books of the Bible did not break their writings into chapters. This is a convention added by the Church centuries ago to aid in reference. Hence, we can gain greater insight as to the meaning of the word 'woman' by taking this into consideration in reading the last verse of Revelation 11 together with Revelation 12.

The Blessed Virgin Mary is the 'New Ark of the Covenant', as she carried the 'Incarnate Word of God' for 9 months in her womb.. The Old Testament ark of the covenant can not possibly be in Heaven, as it remains on earth hidden (cf.2 Mc 2:5). On the other hand, the New Ark of the Covenant was assumed body and soul into Heaven (cf. Ps 132:8). Therefore, the Ark of the Covenant that St. John saw in Heaven had to be the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Mother of God (cf. Lk 1:43).

In furtherance of this prophecy the Mother of God has appeared with a crown of stars, and clothed with the sun and with the moon at her feet in a number of her apparitions (e.g. Our Lady of Guadalupe). We have additional assurance that the above passage refers to the Blessed Virgin in that it states "she brought forth a male child, one who is to rule all the nations with a rod of iron, but her child was caught up to God and to his throne". Ps 2:9 confirms that the phrase, "rules with a rod of iron", refers to Jesus. Additional confirmation is provided in the verbiage, "but her child was caught up to God and to his throne". This can be no other than Jesus, the Son of God.

Lastly, note that the woman wears a crown. Queens and Queen Mothers wear crowns.

A record number of 714 priests concelebrated Holy Mass with Archbishop Rino Fisichella on the final evening of the Medjugorje Youth Festival. The archbishop (pictured) is President of the Pontifical Council for the Promotion of the New Evangelisation.

The daily totals for concelebrating priests during the five-day 30th Mladifest were: (day 1) 620; (day 2) 678; (day 3) 689; (day 4) 537; (day 5) 714.

It’s an astonishing story. It involves an agnostic psychologist who went to a remote village in what was then Communist Yugoslavia — the Hercegovinan sector — to evaluate what on earth was transpiring with six children there who claimed that five days before, on June 24, 1981, they had begun seeing the Virgin Mary.

She was certain, was Dr. Darinka Glamuzina, a pediatrician with psychiatric training, that it was a psychological circumstance — if not a simple game orchestrated by the youngsters who each day were falling to their knees on a stony hillside in perfect synchronization, their eyes fixed on an invisible something (or as they insisted, someone).

And so it was, that Monday, June 30, in Bijakovići — a village in the parish of Medjugorje — that Dr. Glamuzina, working in nearby Citluk, arrived, at the behest of Communist authorities, to evaluate what was transpiring — alerted initially to the circumstance by an ambulance driver who worked at her clinic and had driven the children there.

“I had a Catholic education when I was very young, but then I went to school and was on the faculty of a college in Zagreb and thought I knew everything because I read so many books,” she told Spirit Daily. “I was twenty-five at the time. I had education in psychology at that time and I was agnostic. Very skeptical.

“When I heard about it, it was very funny to me and I did not believe. I knew it was a primitive territory, Medjugorje, and I thought it was some sort of mass hysteria because they were primitive.”

The children had been brought to the clinic for evaluation by another medical professional, Dr. Ante Vujevic, who would later announce that he could no longer call himself a nonbeliever.

But at this point, skepticism — if not outright rejection of such a claim — still ruled the thoughts of Dr. Glamuzina, however.

“I got very excited,” she says. “The manager of the clinic said to me to go with them the next day to Medjugorje as a medical worker, that as medical workers they should be in Medjugorje to observe what was going on. I agreed and went to Medjugorje.

“My desire was to question them. I remember everything clearly because of the emotions I had at that time. I questioned them on how old they were, what grade of education they were in, what sort of students they were.

“I asked about the apparitions of Our Lady and the answers they gave me were so clear and intelligible (though some of them were below-average students). I was impressed with the shortness of their answers and the speed at which they were giving the answers. And that they were so convinced. It was unbelievable, how convinced they were. I was very impressed. I found out that what they knew they really knew. The youngest, Jakov Colo [at the time just ten] said, “You may kill me, but I do see her.”

Indeed, soon they would be detained by Communist police and interrogated — never backing down despite the stated threat of jail.

Though raised Catholics, and though in a devout part of Yugoslavia (culturally Croatian), the children, under the informational blackout of Communism, had not even heard of places such as Lourdes and Fatima. They knew only that they were seeing the Blessed Virgin spoken about by their elders when they recited a Rosary.

“Everything about it was unbelievable,” says the pediatrician.

“Thousands of people were on the streets. The manager knew [seer] Vicka’s family and so we went to her house. There were many people, and all of them were praying the Rosary. That was unbelievable to me, the atmosphere. The place was packed with energy. I did not want to stick out from the crowd so I asked for a rosary even though I did not know how to pray it.

“In one moment, Vicka said, ‘Let’s go,’ and she started going up the hill and I don’t know how we climbed the apparition hill. The crowd was going up and all of a sudden the other visionaries were there — they just showed up — and formed a line, all six of them.

“I was next to Vicka. I wanted to use my position next to her for my medical evaluation. I was convinced that maybe it was some kind of manipulation or hypnosis — somebody using them, and I would be able to see that.

“Another surprise for me was that they were praying for a long time, and at the same moment, all six said — at the very same moment! — ‘There she comes.’ I was watching them and all six said it at the same time and I saw that all six of them were looking at the same spot at the same time. They were talking and sharing with us what the image was telling them.

“And all of a sudden I got the idea to interfere with the happening. I asked Vicka, ‘May I ask that vision a question?’ And this was very interesting to me — how Vicka said, ‘I am going to ask Our Lady.’ So I realized there was a dialogue. I heard Vicka say, ‘Our Lady, can she ask you something.’ And she waited for answer and said, ‘Yes, you can.’

The dialogue as recorded by a priest there: “Dear Madonna! Could this lady [Dr. Glamuzina] touch you?”

The Virgin reportedly replied, “There have always been unfaithful Judases. Let her come.”

Was that reported accurately — or did Mary say that there always had been Thomases.

“I was a little upset, disturbed,” says Dr. Glamuzina, who later testified before a Vatican Commission which authenticated the first week of apparitions — in all, at least seven, meaning one more than the official apparitions at Fatima. (In both cases, more apparitions occurred after the initial ones.) “I was thinking in a medical way. Vicka said to the vision, ‘This lady is asking who you are’ and then Vicka [quoting Mary] replied, ‘She said she is Queen of Peace.’

“How can we have peace when we have so many religions, I asked? I saw Vicka’s lips move and she told me, ‘Our Lady said, there is only one Faith, One God, and One Spirit.’ I was shaken by the answer, because I knew this wasn’t a child’s answer and I saw that there was a dialogue going on.

“This was such a rural area. I asked ‘Why here? Why not at Notre Dame in Paris? Why here in the middle of nowhere?’ I saw Vicka asking that question, and the answer [from Our Lady] was, ‘Because the Faith is firm here.’ I knew it was true because I never saw people pray so much. I knew the answer was true, that it was right.

“I got the answer but also thought I should have an experience, so I said to Vicka, ‘May I touch her?’ and Vicka asked Our Lady and the answer came back, ‘Yes, you can.’ So Vicka was indicating to me where to kneel down, and I knelt down and I raised my hand and my personality split. All of a sudden I knew that what I touched was God. I felt the presence with my entire being. I knew. I knew that I was not worthy of what I touched.” Witnesses said Dr. Glamuzina looked, on her descent from the hill, like she was in a state of shock.

Why did the apparition occur, and why has she now been there so long?

“Because we are completely illiterate spiritually,” says the doctor, whose husband’s specialty is chemistry. “The world is in a spiritual crisis. She comes as a teacher and a healer.”

According to a report by a BBC reporter, the pediatrician, guided by Vicka, touched the Blessed Mother on her left shoulder “and later publicly admitted that she felt a violent tremor along the whole length of her arm. When she eventually stumbled down the hill, she was in a state of shock.”

Dr. Glamuzina mentioned no such feeling to Spirit Daily but rather an overwhelming feeling in the depths of her agnostic soul. “I knew it was something beyond our comprehension,” she says.

When, after the apparition, she spoke with a second seer, Mirjana Soldo, with whom she walked down the hill, this second seer quoted Mary as saying precisely what Vicka had related. “I asked Mirjana the same questions I asked Our Lady and she gave the same answers,” says Dr. Glamuzina. “I questioned them individually and they all heard the same words. I knew that they saw her.”

“I was so shaken that I was crying all night long, holding the rosary, and asking Our Lady to forgive me. I knew God really exists and I realized I knew nothing about Him.”
