We have a 2-year-old something or another, top loader. It has all the energy/water saving computerized things built in.
When you load it up the sequence goes something like this:
* The lid locks
* A little bit of water is added, and it spins slowly - presumably to weigh the load and check balance.
* Water is added - spit, spit, gurgle, trickle.
* The total amount of water would probably be something in the neighborhood of 5 gallons. Just enough to float a child's toy boat, but not enough to completely submerge the clothes.
* Depending on the type of cycle selected, water temp for wash and rinse is pre-selected for you - the machine knows best what you need, of course.
* Rinse is adequate, but again, the water level is Low.
* Cleaning is adequate, but once again, certainly not better than a washer full of wash and rinse water.
Conclusion: If you want your washer to think for you, get a fancy new one. If you want to think for yourself, be sure you understand exactly how your new machine will actually work. We're not willing to change now - so we're stuck w/ this one. We wash everything on the "Bulky Item" setting, with "Very Soiled" added, to get a decent amount of water.
Grrrrrr
