Picked up 50 pounds of DAK canned ham. If you don't have this in your prep items, it might be worth your while to consider it.

It is delicious premium ham, fully cooked in the can. Comes in one pound cans and has a 5 year shelf life. I get my local Wal-Mart to order it for me and they charge me $3.30 per can.

How long is that good for sitting on the shelf? BTW - great idea.

Well lets see as of late......... lots of canning (praise the Lord! that we had a good summer). Still running in most mornings; up to about 4 miles now. Getting my tetnus shot boosted here soon. Laid in a bunch of horse manure to winter over in our garden.

Of course there are other 'things', but we can't share them all now can we!

Default wood cook stove - sort of

As I don't have the $ for a wood cook stove, I adapted my BBQ grill to meet the need. Went to the local weld shop and had them make me a 1/4" plate "griddle" to sit in place of the grill racks. 20"x22.25 with a catch rail 1" on the back side of it. Two carry handles make it easy to move on and off the grill. I modified my grill with a 3" vent below the stove top height, and as I have a smoker box on the side, I can build the fire first let it get going and then place the stove top on to heat. If I need to add wood I add it through the smoker box.
Works as stove top, griddle, and (I hope) an oven. I haven't used it as an oven yet, but the theory should be sound. Already has a temp guage, so it will be trial and error. May start with some "automatic bisquits" first. But at least I know I can cook, if the power goes out, and I run out of propane.

    Good Deal!

Today I got a great deal on Kedem Gefilte Fish. I love this fish but simply will NOT buy it if it contains MSG. This brand doesn't have MSG nor matzo fillers.

It normally sells for $6.69 a 24 oz jar. I got it for $1.99 a jar.

They had six jars in the markdown cart but two of them .......the seal was broken.........so I got the other 4 jars.

This is premium Gefilte Fish containing White Carp and Mullet with egg and sugar, pepper, salt, carrot and onion.

I am salivating already at the thought of consuming this fish.

Made it to two food pantries today..........got a whole chicken at one and an organic beef rib-eye steak that sold in the grocery store for 1/2 pound for $10.25...........got it free.

Been prepping food as hard and fast as possible. Since I don't have a homestead I do the best I can with storing food.

I try to stay additive free as possible.

I harvested more seeds, Dill, today, and also bought more canning jars. When I clean out all our very full freezers, my game plan is to do some canning. We plan to do a lot more fishing and there is zero room to freeze any more! I also needed canning jars to prepare for my next Comfrey harvest- to make a lot more Comfrey Oil. Part of that harvest will be dried, too. We ordered a solar charger for our little boat. After Len completes his latest job, an aluminum deck w/railings, part of that paycheck will go for another solar charger for our travel trailer. We are preparing for expected power outages this Winter...

This is more of a weekend thing: Putting together bug-out-bags for the family.

A little over a week ago, my brother (a 1stSgt in the USMC) gave me two complete MOLLE packs with frames, sustainment bags, waste packs, multiple canteens and carriers, two complete GI sleep systems, etc. Also gave me one older complete ALICE pack with frame! Other things too like gas masks, two shelter halves and hardware, two e-tools, rain ponchos and liners, and two IFAKs.

I'm trying to set up packs for the four of us. My 6 year old is a little bit small, so he'll be responsible for the med backpack - carrying it anyway IF we were to have to bail out of the vehicle on the way out of town. My 10 year old is a pretty tough little girl, so she'll be good with the ALICE, lightly loaded.

My ultimate goal is to have everything packed and ready to go at a moment's notice. I want to set a time limit for seven minutes from word "go," until we are pulling out of the driveway with packs, meds, money, and guns & ammo.

Before anyone complains too (if anyone would) this is all old woodland camo, but in most in class 1A condition, and beyond its serviceability date according to the gov't. It's been sitting in his basement for quite a few years, so it just needed to be aired out to get the "old" smell off of it.

I really feel like I hit the jackpot with this stuff!

If anyone is interested, I have a couple high cap mags for a 92FS for sale too, $10 each. I don't have one, but they also came with the gear my brother gave me.
