I of course said yes. When we got down there he ask if I would like buckets and cans of food. If we did not take them he was going take them to the woods and dump them. He gave us 20+ 2.25 LBS cans of ham, bacon, beef, and taco flavored Textured vegtable protein from Ready Reserve Foods. I have never eated or cooked with TVP but I am going to learn. He also gave us 15 5 gallon buckets they had dried peas, lentils, oatmeal, lima beans, brown beans and rice in them. Thankfully I know how to cook all those things. The canning jars were under the porch and under the house they are dirty so I have to wash them but I got over 100 jars. Most were quarts but there were a few 1/2 gallons.Dad still has more TVP and buckets of food he said he would save for me. I did not have room to haul them.Hubby and I figured we got hundreds of dollars of food for just going to get it. Dad thinks we are going to feed this stuff to the chickens. The chickens are not getting it. This has helped our preps along so much. God is so good.
I also have been shopping at our local Kroger they are having a mega sale. It is such a thrill to buy over $200 of food and watch it go down to under $100. Sales and coupons are awesome. It sure helps you prep.
    Thanks for letting me share.

Awesome first post and quite the score!!! I'm jealous of all the 'free' jars!!

I'll second the welcome! I think you're going to like this site.

    Welcome KIM!

What a fantastic first post. If I were you I'd be dancing all around those preps.

Oh yeah, let the chicken eat grass! LOL!

That was a great haul. Personally, I'd feed the TVP to the chickens, or dogs. Soy just isn't that great for people (probably isn't great for animals in huge amounts, either!) TVP is as close to "fake food" as I think they make.

However, it's better than starving. I'd just personally probably feed it to chickens and pigs, and then consume THEM... recycling, as it were.

Please remember that most foods can't be safely canned in 1/2 gallon canning jars. They do make great canisters for storing dry foods (safely away from mice and insects) and they work well for pickles and juices.

Took advantage of some $1.88/lb arm roasts and canned up 12 quarts of roast beef. This is getting to be a darn habit.

Thanks for the advice about the TVP I have never used it after hearing your advice and since the cans are made to be stored for long periods of time we store them in the back of the shed and when we are unable to get chicken feed or dog feed we will share our treasure with the animals. I did not know about the side effects cyberiot, thanks for the warning.
Summerthyme, you are so right about the 1/2 gallon jars I do not even have a canner tall enough to can in them. My plan was as you stated to use them to store the dry goods that are now in the buckets. I would rather have the jars in the house than buckets. Most the buckets will be stored in a cool dry place and as I need them transfered into jars.
Thanks for the warm welcome. You all are so wise I am learning so much from you. Kim

    Welcome to the tree Kim!

That's quite the awsome score that came your way. And it sounds like you are the kind of person who knows it's value and what to do with it!

I went into town to get a haircut on Friday. While I was getting my haircut I noticed a sign stating the price as of Oct 1st is $15. Well that's the final straw since I have been going bald for years and see no reason I should have to pay full price.

When I got home I did a search and found these: Remington SCC-100R ShortCut Clipper for $35. They are clippers designed to give yourself a haircut with a brush-like design and are rechargeable.

I'm going to give them a try. If they work as described I will be saving some money. Could also come in handy if TSHTF occurs as you can keep your hair short and lice free! As long as you have a renewable power source that is....

Yeah - feel your pain. Years ago I got tired of paying nearly $20 to cut my meager head of hair, we bought a Wall clipper set for about $30 or so and have been doing my hair at the house since. The thing has paid for itself probably a hundred times already. Ya gotta figure you'll save yourself about $200 a year now!
