    Default Baked Spam

    Another old family recipe by general request...


    Baked Spam
    1 large can Spam
    Baste with mixture of:
    1/3 cup brown sugar
    1 tsp. Mustard
    2 tsp. Water

    Bake about 20 minutes at 375º.

    Sounds good. I have never seen any recipes for spam. I love the stuff and my DH hates it. I keep it on hand as my emergency back up, but DH says he'd rather die of starvation than eat the stuff. Oh well, nice knowing ya huney.....:) I'll never give up my cans of spam..LOL

    LOL Gypsey My family hates the stuff, but the 2 cases I have will go to good use ME!!!! They eat enough grass and dandilions, they'll eat Spam.

    Our family classic- baked Spam and beans

    2 cans Van Camps Pork & Beans
    One can Spam sliced
    One short can sliced pineapple in syrup (Dole if you can find it)- drained

    Put the beans in a glass/corning casserole, arrange the Spam slices over the beans and top with the pineapple slices. Bake at 325 until the beans are bubbly, and the pineapple takes on a bit of a brown glaze, 45-60 min.

    Not exactly "health" food but as a comfort food ranks right up there with tuna casserole and meatloaf!

    Sounds good but anybody got a way to get some of the salt out out of it before cooking/baking? I have alot of it but found out the salt is too much for me to handle....so I'm thinking ..."Now what?"

    I did this one time when out camping. I enjoyed it so have done it again many times since then. It goes well with coleslaw and cornbread:

    Slice Spam and brown both sides of slices in skillet. (Use regular or "Lite" Spam)
    Dump canned baked beans on top of Spam and heat all together. (I like Bush's beans)

    I admit it, I actually like Spam. I realize that probably makes me sound quite odd to most. Realize though, we grew up poor, and whatever was put on the table to eat, was eaten without complaint. (Ever come in from school and supper is on; fatback, pinto beans, and cornbread? And, the fatback is fried. That is your meat.)

    I made a Spam casserole one time that turned out pretty good. I can't remember the order in which I layered it, but it may not matter, as the flavors all combine:

    Cube up Spam as you would meat from a ham and put in Pammed casserole dish.

    Put already cooked and mashed potatoes in.

    You can throw some green peas or mixed vegs in, too if you want.

    Add a can of cream of mushroom soup.

    Grate some sharp cheddar generously over the top.

    Bake in 350 oven until the cheese is all melty.

    Turns out pretty good. My late Mom would make this with ham, potatoes, vegs, cheese, etc. and I just loved it.

    Another thing to do with Spam, and this will help with the saltiness of the regular:

    Cook your dry beans (I love Great Northerns), don't put any seasoning in at this point, and get them nearly done.

    About the last 30 minutes, or when you turn the heat down for them to start winding down, cube up a can of Spam and add to the beans.

    The Spam will warm and the salt in it will season the beans. It is delicious. At the same time you add the Spam, you can slice up an onion also into the pot and it will have time to soften a little and add flavor.

    I'm always cooking beans and something, the ham bone left after a big ham, a can of Spam, some bacon pieces, whatever. Love that country cookin'!

    I like spam, but for me it's a prep food. It's too expensive for every day use.

    We slice a can of Spam maybe 3/8" thick and cube it in 1" square pieces. Fry it to slightly crisp in a large cast iron frying pan. Add two cans of Bush's Baked beans and some onions. Heat it to hot.

    Makes great quick lunch. At least at our house.
