Yes, I have made apple butter in the crock pot for many years. Easy to make, easy to can, tasty on a piece of hot toast! Oh, and I have used apple butter in place of applesauce for cakes/bars/cookies too.

    Nummy.

I'm thinking he meant 5lbs total because my large upright crockpot will hold about that much. I've never weighed and measured the apples, I just start peeling and cutting apples until the pot is slightly overflowing. The apples cook down during the first 2-3 hours and the lid will fit on securely by the time you're ready to go to bed.

I also layer the ingrediants, layer of apples, some of the sugar and spices, layer of apples ... etc...

Thanks, I have some apples left over from an SCA (Middle Ages) event starting to go off and a large crock pot so I may try this.

I've got my apples in the crock pot (unpeeled) and I will finish up tomorrow! If this turns out anywhere close to as good as it sounds I will be in heaven tommorrow

    Default 5 pounds of apples...

This recipe is for 5 pounds of apples! :) sorry I was ambiguous.

core your apples, quarter them and then just throw em in the crock pot.
don't peel em, you won't need to if you puree them.

If you skimp on the cook time, your apple butter will be thinner than if you let it cook longer.
(I made that mistake on the first batch I made..not bad, but a little thin for me)

Instead of cinnamon I use 2 bags of red hots to a crock pot.

I sent my wife out shopping for cloves.
She tells me the little bottles are $9!!!!!!!!!!!!

She started looking around and it seems that nutmeg or allspice are decent substitutes.

Dh picked up cloves for me yesterday. Schilling was 6.59 for the .55 oz and Best Choice was 1.00......guess which one we got! I think I'l do some stocking up while I can still afford to.

I added in the remaining ingrediants this morning and will now patiently wait my 6 hours
