Default I think this applies to almost anything anymore.

I have an old Whirlpool Imperial series heavy duty washer, it's beat to death since I have had it since around 1990, but it still runs like a champ, and I will sure miss it if it dies. I had a microwave oven, very near an 'original' model, it ran for over 12 years before dying. Now I can't find one that will make it 2 years. I call it incorporated obsolescence, keeps the economy going...

I'm sooo glad to have my Maytag wringer washer! I can manually adjust the water levels, proportions of hot and cold water, let it run as long or short as necessary for the load being washed, and those wringers get as much water out as a spin cycle in my book. Yes, it takes more time and attention, but that I have to spare rather than putting up with the agravation of the "modern" models being sold as clothes washers these days.

The pic of the woman with a cup of coffee looking quite content and smug was great! Me thinks you will get your new washer at any moment now seeing that he is handwashing his shirts! I second Craigs List.

In 2004 I thought I wanted a front-loading washer. I went to Lowes and the guy convinced me that the Fisher Paykel was the way to go. I am so glad we bought the set. Haven't had any trouble at all. The last spin cycle is high speed and the clothes are practically dry when they come out so the drying time is reduced. My electric bill dropped $15 in the first month, but it's just the 2 of us. Both daughters bought a set too. I need to replace my dishwasher soon and the F/P dishwashers are sweet!

Ditto to nearly everyone else's posts...I got a front loader in 2007, with a matching dryer. The washer has had two seal replacements, and I am getting ready to replace parts on the dryer. The washer is not getting clothes clean. For some reason, DHs clothes never smell clean, but the rest do...I have baking soda added to the laundry soap, I use white vinegar, we leave the door open...

    Mine is a GE, btw...

Default Mildly interesting bit of related trivia...

Related, that is, to the toploader vs. sideloader question.

I was told by someone about 15 years ago that Orthodox Judaism taught that for a large container (e.g., a processing or storage tank for milk) to produce kosher food, that it had to be cleaned by immersion in a cleaning solution, that simply spraying it down was not considered sufficient.

Further, I agree that sideloaders simply don't clean clothes as well as toploaders, which still use immersion.

HB, be sure and check how the rollers meet, especially in the middle section. If they are really worn and show a gap, they will not squish the water out very well and make sure the "agitator" seats firmly - use your hand to move it and if the agitator moves ON the spindle rather than moving the whole unit it will not agitate the clothes. It should pop off and you can check if the "holding" teeth on the spindle or agirator are worn away. YOu can't tell just by running the machine empty - no resistance that way so it will move nicely. Add water and clothes with all that weight pressure against the agitator makes a difference; manual and visual checking will tell the tale most times.

Mabe in the future when I see energy efficient I will translate to mean does a sorry job. Probably will mean fridge won't cool below a certain temp and dishwahers will leave the dishes dirty.

Certainly, fluorescent light is << in quality compared with incandescent.
