Default Costa Rica International Airport is out of Fuel

I just got a call from a friend that is scheduled to fly from San Jose, Costa Rica to Houston, Texas today. He was getting ready to board the flight and was told that the plane has to make an unscheduled stop in either Panama or Nicaragua for fuel.

The San Jose airport is out of jet fuel. This is not a normal occurrence here.
I am curious if fuel shortages are happening any where else in the world right now.

Last Friday I flew out of Liberia Costa Rica and was supposed to land in Houston. There were thunderstorms in Houston (not unusual for the Gulf Coast) and the pilot said we didn't have enough fuel to stay in the holding pattern so he diverted to New Orleans.

A small airline canceled a lot of flights in Niagara Falls also. There is speculation that they could not afford the fuel.

Friends of mine few out this morning for Dallas, no problem...

Huh. Are there any news sources on this? Was it an issue with the airline not wanting to pay airport fuel taxes?

My husband flies there multiple times a month. Got back today, never heard of this. His is a pilot. Three trips this month already. The airline may not have had fuel there.
