Default Honda recalls minivans and crossover-utility vehicles

American Honda plans to recall more than 800,000 minivans and crossover-utility vehicles to address a problem that could cause the vehicles to slip out of park and roll away.

The Japanese maker, traditionally known for its high quality, reliability and customer satisfaction has been slammed by an ongoing series of recalls in recent years and appears to be on track for the dubious distinction of having more vehicles involved in safety-related callbacks than any other manufacturer operating in the U.S. for the second year in a row.

The issue involves the ignition interlock, a device intended to ensure that the key can only be removed when a vehicle is firmly shifted into Park. But the mechanism in the vehicles covered by the recall could wear over time and allow the key to be removed when the transmission is in Neutral or some other gear, allowing the vehicle to roll away and a crash could occur.

Default 150K Baby Recliners Recalled After Reports Of Several Deaths, Injuries

    December 27, 2012 6:16 AM

WASHINGTON (AP) — Four national retailers agreed to recall more than 150,000 Nap Nanny baby recliners after at least five infant deaths and dozens of reports of children nearly falling out of the recliners, the Consumer Product Safety Commission said Thursday.

The recall covers Nap Nanny Generations One and Two, and the Chill model infant recliners. All were sold between 2009 and 2012. The Nap Nanny was designed to mimic the curves of a baby car seat, elevating an infant slightly to help reduce reflux, gas, stuffiness or other problems.

The CPSC warned parents and caregivers that the Nap Nanny contains defects in its design, warnings and instructions. The agency said the product poses a substantial risk of injury and death to infants.
The four retailers —, Buy Buy Baby, and Toys R Us/Babies R Us — agreed to voluntarily participate in the recall of the Nap Nanny because its manufacturer is unable or unwilling to participate, the government agency said in a statement.

The manufacturer, Baby Matters LLC of Berwyn, Pa., told The Associated Press earlier this month that it had gone out of business. At the time, the company’s website carried a statement from owner and founder Leslie Gudel that the company didn’t believe the CPSC complaint had merit and that its products were safe when used as instructed.

The first two versions of the foam recliner were recalled in July 2010 after the agency became aware of one death and 22 reports of infants hanging out or falling over the side of the Nap Nanny even though most of the infants had been placed in the recliner’s harness. Since then, the agency learned of four more deaths. Four were linked to the first versions of the recliner, and one to the newer model.

Five thousand Nap Nanny Generation One and 50,000 Generation Two models were sold between 2009 and early 2012. About 100,000 Chill models have been sold since January 2011.

The CPSC advised consumers seeking more information about the recall to review the return policies of the retailers participating in the recall.

Default Vega recalls 30,000-plus motorcycle helmets

    December 29, 2012

Vega Helmet Corp. is recalling more than 30,000 XTS motorcycle helmets after testing found that a few did not meet crash protection safety standards.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said people using the helmets may not be adequately protected in a crash. The recall will start in late January and centers on large, extra-large and extra-extra-large (or XXL) helmets. The models in question were made between May 2011 and last October, according to a notice posted Saturday on the NHTSA's web site.

Vega, based in Tukwila, Wash., said it will replace the recalled helmets.
The NHTSA told Vega that four extra-large helmets didn't meet safety standards when tested earlier this year. The company investigated and found that the helmets fell out of compliance partially due to changes in the model's shell design. Vega told regulators that the helmet's design would be reconfigured immediately.

Vega doesn't know how many of the helmets in the recalled population failed to meet the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard so the company is recalling all of them, according to a letter from an attorney representing the company to an NHTSA official.

Default Honda recalls 770,000 vehicles in N.America

Honda Motor, a major Japanese auto company, says it plans to recall about 770,000 sport-utility vehicles and minivans, mainly sold in the United States and Canada, to address airbag irregularities.

Honda announced on Friday that it is recalling "Pilot" SUVs from model years 2009 through 2013 and "Odyssey" minivans from 2011 through 2013 models.

It says the recalls involve 748,000 vehicles in the United States and 29,000 in Canada.

Honda says an airbag on the driver's side may not function properly in the event of a crash due to the lack of an essential component.

The company said no accidents caused by the faulty airbag have been reported yet.

Default Mitsubishi recalls 14,700 electric cars globally over brakes

    TOKYO | Thu Jan 24, 2013 4:20am EST

(Reuters) - Mitsubishi Motors Corp said it would recall about 14,700 electric vehicles (EV) globally due to a brake problem unique to the electric-motor powered cars in one of the biggest callbacks involving the new generation of eco-friendly cars.

Mitsubishi Motors said that in Japan it would recall nearly 3,400 i-MiEV electric vehicles, as well as more than 2,400 MINICAB-MiEV vehicles.
Overseas, mostly in Europe, it said it was recalling about 8,900 i-MiEV vehicles. Some of those are sold as PSA Peugeot Citroen's iOn and C-Zero, though Mitsubishi declined to say how many.

The EV recall by Mitsubishi is small compared to recalls of conventional petrol-driven vehicles which have numbered in the millions, though it accounts for nearly half of their overall i-MiEV and MINICAB-MiEV production.

Electric vehicles are struggling to make inroads into the autos sector despite a big push by the Obama administration to boost sales, as the green cars often fall short of consumer expectations especially in running distance.

Default Toyota to recall 1.1 million vehicles for airbag, wiper glitches

    Jan 30, 2013

(Reuters) - Toyota Motor Corp will recall 1.1 million cars globally for two separate defects, including 752,000 Corolla and Corolla Matrix vehicles in the United States to fix airbags that could be deployed inadvertently, the automaker said on Wednesday.

It is the third Toyota recall since October to involve more than a million cars, and it comes as the company tries to recover from a damaged reputation following a series of recalls between 2009 and 2011 that were related to unintended acceleration problems.

An IC chip in the airbag control unit can malfunction when it receives electrical interference from other parts in the car, causing the airbags to deploy when it is not necessary, Toyota spokesman Naoto Fuse said.

Toyota is also recalling certain Corolla and Corolla Matrix vehicles in Japan, Canada, and Mexico.

The problem has caused minor injuries such as abrasions in 18 cases that have been reported, he said. Two accidents have been reported by customers outside Japan, although Toyota has not been able to confirm them, he said.

Toyota will add an electrical signal filter to the airbag control module to the recalled vehicles -- repairs expected to take an hour to hour-and-a-half, he said.

The spokesman declined to disclose the costs involved.

TRW Automotive Holding Corp (TRW.N) has manufactured the airbag control unit in the vehicles, although the problematic chip is supplied by another company, an employee at TRW's Toyota office told Reuters.
He declined to say where TRW buys the chips from.

The financial impact from the airbag recall is likely to be limited, possibly costing Toyota about 5 billion yen, said Koichi Sugimoto, a senior analyst at BNP Paribas in Tokyo.

Toyota may ask suppliers to compensate, he added.

"While this cannot be ignored, this amount is not going to dent Toyota's operations and share prices are unlikely to be impacted much," he said.

Separately, Toyota will also recall 385,000 Lexus IS and its series, including 270,000 Lexus IS vehicles in the United States over wiper problems, Toyota spokesman Fuse said.

The wiper arm nut of the front wiper in these vehicles may not be tight enough and the wiper may not work under certain weather occasions, including in snow.

Toyota will exchange the nut in repairs that will take about 30 minutes, Fuse said.

Toyota has been showing signs of recovery from the recall crisis and won back the crown as the world's top selling automaker in 2012 from General Motors.

In an effort to move past its safety crisis, Toyota proposed last month and got approval from a judge to spend $1.1 billion to settle one of the biggest U.S. auto class-action lawsuits over claims that millions of its vehicles accelerated unintentionally.

Toyota has not admitted fault in proposing the settlement.

As automakers including Toyota increasingly use shared parts for various models, the number of recalled vehicles have tended to balloon.

In October, the automaker also recalled 7.4 million vehicles globally to fix malfunctioning power window switches, and in November it recalled 2.8 million vehicles for a steering glitch.

Toyota is set to announce its October-December earnings results on February 5.

Default Ford recalls 6,500 vehicles for child safety lock

CHICAGO, March 12 (Xinhua) -- Ford Motor Co. is recalling about 6,500 new vehicles in North America to replace a rear door lock that may have a faulty child safety mechanism.

The related models are some 2013 Ford Focus, C-Max and Escape vehicles in the United States and Canada because the child lock on the left rear door may have been installed incorrectly, the Detroit News reported Tuesday.

"The child lock may not engage when the operator uses normal turning force to activate the child lock, and the operator may incorrectly believe the child lock is engaged," Ford told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

No crashes or injuries connected to the recall has been found, Ford said.
The recall covers 5,675 vehicles in the United States as well as 859 in Canada.

The vehicles were built at Ford's Michigan Assembly plant in Wayne and Louisville Assembly from Nov. 16-21.

During the review, Ford found that a supplier had sent a mixed stock of parts, which led to the faulty latches.

Default Honda recalls 250,000 cars for brake defect

TOKYO (AP) — Honda is recalling nearly 250,000 vehicles worldwide for brakes that can suddenly kick in even when the driver isn't braking.

No crashes have been reported related to the defect.

Honda Motor Co. said Thursday it was recalling more than 183,000 vehicles in the U.S., including the Acura RL, Acura MDX and Pilot models.

More than 56,000 vehicles were recalled in Japan, affecting the Odyssey, Legend, StepWgn and Elysion models.

Also being recalled are nearly 8,000 vehicles in Canada, nearly 1,000 in Australia, about 300 in Mexico and 70 in Germany. The vehicles were produced from March 2004 through May 2006.

Some drivers complained about the problem, including 17 in Japan and one in the U.S.

The problem is caused by improper electronics and wiring in the vehicle-stability-assist system.

Default Toyota recalls 209,000 SUVs for seatbelt problem

    March 15, 2013

Toyota is recalling about 209,000 of its beefy FJ Cruiser SUVs from the 2007 through 2013 model years.

The problem involves the seatbelt retractors for the front seats. In the FJ those retractors are mounted on the "half-doors" that allow rear seat access.

Toyota says that it didn't make those door panels strong enough and that "cracks may develop over an extended period of time if the rear door is repeatedly and forcefully closed."

It says that that if the panel cracks around the anchor for the lower seatbelt retractor, the retractor could come off.

The company says it has no reports of accidents or injuries and that FJ owners will be notified shortly to bring their trucks to a dealer for repairs.

Default GM recalls about 33,700 vehicles to fix software issue

General Motors Co is recalling about 33,700 model-year 2013 Buick LaCrosse sedans and Cadillac SRX crossover vehicles globally to address a potential software problem that could increase the risk of a crash.

GM said the problem may cause the transmission to unexpectedly slip from manual to automatic mode. The U.S. automaker said there are no reports of crashes or injuries related to the issue.

The recall affects 26,582 vehicles in the United States, with the rest in Canada, Mexico, the Middle East and China, the company said.

Dealers will reprogram the transmission control module free of charge.

The Detroit company also recalled 48 compressed natural gas-powered versions of the 2011-model Chevrolet Express full-sized vans to repair a potentially incorrectly built pressure relief vent pipe that could allow natural gas into the passenger compartment and increase the risk of an explosion or fire.

GM said all the vans, which were sold to three U.S. fleet customers and one dealer, have been inspected, and there were no reported crashes, injuries or fires related to the issue.
