The recall into the Flour is expanding. Now it is warning about eating uncooked cookie dough.

Due to four new confirmed illnesses, General Mills is adding additional flour production dates to the previously announced U.S. retail flour recall that was originally announced on May 31, 2016. The illnesses reported to health officials continue to be connected with consumers reporting that they ate or handled uncooked dough or ate uncooked batter made with raw flour.

The addition of new flour production dates is the result of General Mills conducting proactive flour testing and new information from health officials who are using new whole genome sequencing techniques to trace illnesses. E.coli (several sub-types) has been detected in a small number of General Mills flour samples and some have been linked to new patient illnesses that fell outside of the previously recalled dates.
At this time, it is unknown if we are experiencing a higher prevalence of E.coli in flour than normal, if this is an issue isolated to General Mills’ flour, or if this is an issue across the flour industry. The newer detection and genome sequencing tools are also possibly making a connection to flour that may have always existed at these levels.

Gel Spice, Inc. is expanding its recall of ground turmeric powder to include additional brands because of elevated lead levels. Lead can accumulate in the body over time. Too much can cause health problems, including delayed mental and physical development and learning deficiencies. Pregnant women, infants and young children especially should avoid exposure to lead. People concerned about blood lead levels should contact their physician or health clinic to ask about testing.
The additional products being recalled are identified in the table below.

Sampling and testing of another product, produced from the same bulk turmeric, revealed the elevated level of lead.
No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this problem.

Sam’s Club bakery supplier denies it is endangering consumers


BY CORAL BEACH | AUGUST 19, 2016Orange Bakery Inc., whose customers include Whole Foods Market and Sam’s Club, this week denied claims in a federal civil case that allege the company stopped required food safety testing and has been forging third-party certifications for more than a year.
The bakery company, based in Irvine, CA, has several facilities across the U.S. It supplies fresh and frozen baked goods and dough to retailers and distributors nationwide, including Rich Foods, US Foods Service and Sysco, according to the complaint. The latter two companies are the nation’s largest foodservice suppliers, with customers that include thousands of schools, restaurants, hotels, hospitals and other foodservice operations.

FDA confirms Hepatitis A in scallops; multi-state recall begins

BY CORAL BEACH | AUGUST 19, 2016Federal officials have confirmed Hepatitis A in frozen, imported scallops that have been linked to an outbreak in Hawaii and are working with Sea Port Products Corp. to recall the shellfish from three states.
None of the implicated scallops were sold direct to consumers, according to a notice posted today by the Food and Drug Administration, but they were distributed restaurants and retailers in California, Hawaii and Nevada.

3 brands of frozen corn recalled in 15 states because of Listeria

A Pennsylvania company is recalling three brands of its frozen corn that were distributed to 15 states because a package sampled from a retail store tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes.
Cambridge Farms LLC of Lancaster, PA, has ceased the production and distribution of the frozen corn and is working with the Food and Drug Administration to find out what caused the problem, according to the recall notice posted early this evening.

Three brands — Laura Lynn, Key Food and Better Valu — are included in the recall. There is concern that consumers may have the product in their home freezers because of its long shelf life, which reaches well into 2018.

The recalled corn was distributed to 15 states: North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, Virginia, New York, Connecticut, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia, Kentucky, Maryland and Florida.

The International Company for Agricultural Production & Processing (ICAPP) is voluntarily recalling certain lots of its frozen strawberries out of an abundance of caution in response to a U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) investigation of an outbreak of Hepatitis A. For more information about this investigation, please visit FDA’s outbreak investigation website at http://www.fda.gov/Food/RecallsOutbr.../ucm518775.htm.
The recalled products were all distributed for sale to and use in food service establishments nationwide -- not for use in food products offered for retail sale to consumers. Nonetheless, ICAPP is issuing this news release publicly to help mitigate any possible risk to the public health and to fully ensure that all recalled products are recovered. Although none of ICAPP’s own testing through an established surveillance program or through third party testing of retained samples has identified the presence of Hepatitis A in any of its products, ICAPP has decided to recall all frozen strawberries that it has imported into the United States since January 1, 2016 out of an abundance of caution.
No other ICAPP products, frozen or fresh, are covered by this voluntary recall.
