Default Has anyone looked at the psychotropic drugs all the shooters were using?

Throughout all the media coverage of the mass shootings in Colorado and Connecticut and elsewhere, I've seen little hints and tidbits about how this shooter was under a psychiatrist's care and that one was taking some sort of medication. Something like a fifth of the population in the U.S. is taking a mood-altering drug. Yet I haven't seen any stories tying it all together. Can anyone point me to that, or is it one of those topics that seems to be on the media's Ignore list?

You have missed a number of threads here on this subject.
If you are also a member on TB there are a number of threads there also.

There are folks who want to absolutely ban SSRI's and other honestly life saving drugs due to the actions of 0.000002% of the people prescribed them.
ANd people who want to hold doctors civilly and criminally responsible for prescribing them, again due to the above percentage.

I thought they found no drugs in Lanza's system?

And just as with guns, it doesn't matter what laws they pass, if someone wants something, they are going to get something. All a law does is prevent honest people from getting an item for its proper use/intent.

Drug addicts still get illegal drugs. Criminals still get illegal guns.

I'm not suggesting a ban on SSRIs, only a look at what role, if any, they played in the events.

The problem I see with SSRI's, on the whole, is not that they need to be banned, but just like antibiotics not all people will react the same way to an SSRI and this has to do with the individual type of mental illness each patient is suffering from! ie one patient may be schizoid due to physical injury, while another may be schizoid due to a chemical imbalance of sorts, the end result is the same drug won't have the same effect on every patient. My neighbor is bi-polar, severly so, she didn't respond to any of the bi-polar meds but intetestingly enough responds to one of the schizoid meds and shock treatment.

Big pharma would have us believe that one pill cures all disease when this couldn't be further from the truth.

Exactly my point. I think they're being over-prescribed as some sort of cure-all the same way Ritalin became the drug of choice for any child who couldn't sit still for 10 minutes.

PW, I dont know what's happening here, but I find myself agreeing with a disturbing number of your posts lately. Considering how much you and I disagree on so many topics, it's a little unnerving.

I am a widower. My wife was on these drugs for the longest time. Although I can not project to the general population her experiences but I have some simple thoughts.

It is when you want to go cold turkey or forget to take them that your system goes berserk. The lack of or right balance of happy hormones in the system are so depleted that the body is very dependent on the drug. If someone is not monitored or does not care about regularity the thoughts of suicide and homicide are common withdrawal symptoms.

I think they are over prescribed to the general public. I have heard that over 25% of females in the US are currently taking these drugs. I do not know the percentage of females.

They are clearly a cause of imbalance when someone suddenly stops taking them. Just think what it is going to be like when the whole system stops and people can not get their drugs!

Seeking Wisdom... similar effects (suicidal or violent/homicidal thoughts) ALSO occur in the first days of taking these drugs in a significant minority of patients. While you're absolutely correct that when TSHTF, those who are dependent on SSRI meds or other psychoactive drugs are going to go through hellish withdrawals, that's not their only problem.

This potential problem (the med giving a previously depressed/distressed person enough energy to actually carry out actions they had previously been unable to consider, due to a lack of physical and psychic energy) is why I keep screaming that, while the meds are useful and can be lifesaving, they need to be prescribed by specialists who then will CLOSELY monitor the patient for a MINIMUM of several weeks (on a weekly or even more frequent basis, depending on the individual and their reactions), until they are sure that this particular individual isn't likely to be one of the few who go utterly nuts on the stuff.

Just like it's NOT "guns" who kill, it's NOT "psychoactive meds" which make people crazy. But in the wrong hands... they both can be an utter disaster. And FAR too many people are being prescribed them by family practice docs, or worse, physicians assistants or nurse practitioners. And WAY too many of them have no real idea about the potential problems these meds can cause, either starting out on them or trying to get off them.
