Doesn't stand up to scrutiny. Causation versus correlation.

There's a general consensus going back to Malthus that "poor people have the most babies and are responsible for overpopulation." You see it every day or two on this forum where someone is complaining about all the black/brown/yellow babies.

But yet poor people have less access to energy than wealthier people.

So how exactly is surplus energy causing a population boom?

Only when conditions improve enough for larger numbers of their procreations to survive.

When I get home from work, I'm too tired to make babies.

Maybe being poor means you DO have surplus energy. :D

Maybe it's because the lights are always out.

We have so much surplus energy that we can now pay humans to stay home and breed.

I'm not sure it all has to do with "Surplus Energy" but advancements in technology as well as a warmer climate always lead to higher populations. One event where we dont grow crops for 1 year and populations will decline rapidly.

Sanitary water stops babies from dying, that's why the population went up. People aren't having more babies, they just are burying fewer infants.

Surplus energy actually destroys birthrates. If people have nothing to do once the sun sets, then a lot more babies are made.

But if people fall asleep watching American Idol and playing video games, a lot less babies are made.

If you want to lower the world's population, then get electricity to all the houses in the 3rd world!!!

That old myth is apparently live and well here at TOL.

If you're poor, it's your own fault because you're either too lazy or too stupid to make money.
