Default UPDATE: snow blower help please

long story short, a family member is going to buy us a snow blower. we have never had one before and we don't really know much about the good brands or the bad brands. we need a 2 stage

here are some brands that we have seen around us

    poulan
    MTD
    murray
    snow devil
    snow-tek

what does everyone think of those?

i am thinking that the price range will be about in the $500-$600 range

    thank you

also, although we have been looking on craigslist (which does open up out choices of brands), since we do not know much about the quality of them, and we cannot go driving all over God's white earth, we thought it would be best to buy from somewhere around us, unless we find a good deal online

    LOL

    get this

i go over the neighbor to ask his advice on different machines. being that he lives here, he would know about the types available here.

i asked him if we could get his advice, and he asks about what. i said we are thinking of getting a snowblower and wanted his thoughts. he said "well, have i got a deal for you...come here."

he points to one snow blower and says that is his mothers from her estate from when she died. he pointed to his old one and asked if we wanted that one. i asked him how much, and he said we could have it for FREE! i argued with him abuot that for a bit, and he said he had been thinking about that for a while, andhe wanted to give it to us! i told him part of the reason we were getting one was so that he would nothave to do the driveway all the time. (we share the driveway) he told me a few things about it, and some tricks, and he said he was happy to let us have it

    praise you Lord!!! thank you!

I have a Torro something like this.
    http://www.snowblowersdirect.com/Tor...wer/p8725.html

What used to take me 3 hours with a shovel takes about half an hour. I can not start it by hand unless it is warm and within about ten minutes of shut off. I have to use the electric starter.

There are probably good throwers for less money. I think I paid about $600 15 years age. I see prices have gone up.

The auger is not real good on real wet snow almost ice. Mine will kick the wheels back about a foot so there is more weight on the front which is helpful when the snow plow buries my drive way with a hard packed lump of three foot deep snow.

The rubber sweeper types work well here (central Iowa) as we tend to get less snow and wetter snow. But on a ten inch snow the auger works great.

I'm going to look into a smaller version of that one, OC. I have a long driveway to clear, plus a city sidewalk, but I don't need one as large as yours.

This is a first for me because I had an 11 x 14 pad that I cleared by hand, and some years, I only shoveled a half-dozen times around the garage door. No city sidewalk at my old place.

Huny, that is truly awesome! What a great gift.

Huny... God is SO good! First, He told you you needed a snowblower... and then He provided one! I'll bet that neighbor would love a batch of homemade cookies!
