I had an old Mercury outboard on my sailboat. First tank of ethanol gas caused the plastic lining of the gas tank to dissolve off and the rubber tubing to soften up. It burned black and stuttered and would not accelerate. I had to replace all the gas lines with more modern materials, plugs fouled and replaced, gas tank replaced with a new one, sprayed out the carb and intakes with acetone, finally got it going. Painful lesson in the solvent characteristics of ethanol.
