Did you see the movie? I remember when they were tearing the barracks apart and with that there was a danger that the buildings would just fall down!
IIRC at one time they were storing some of the dirt in the attics too.
I've seen it a couple times. It's a timeless classic, and now that you mention it I do recall the dirt in the attic. I think I'll rent it and watch again. With respect to the guards, I doubt they were that big of idiots, rather they just didn't really care all that much.
