Default Any Good Ideas for Papaya?

We planted a paypaya tree last spring and it's loaded with the fruit. We've tried a few different ways of eating it and we're having a hard time, partly with the smell. We've tried it fresh in salads and we just dehydrated a bunch. Nothing is working all that well, which is very frustrating given the huge amount of fruit we're getting. We've also looked on-line for recipes and didn't turn up much that looked good. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Talking I love the stuff ...

Wish you were closer ... I'd buy it from you.

It is really great for upset stomachs.

When you dry it it will change the smell and the flavor a lot.

    How about a fruit relish?

    Jam or jelly?

Muffins are good. Just add the same amount as apple or blueberries.

Even my cat loves the stuff. He goes crazy anytime he smells it.

Where did you get the tree from? I'd love to plant a few here.

Look up "som tam". Green papaya salad. If I had a papaya tree, none of them would ever get ripe, because I would use them all for som tam.

Add it to salsa. Rick Bayless on on his TV show Mexico One Plate At A Time uses it quite a bit. Just slice it off, dice and add to this or that.

An employee of mine has a mom in Florida that sends him Papaya. He uses her recipe and makes it into a faux Salmon. It's startlingly convincing. I'll see if I can get the recipe.

The Costa Ricans told us to cut it up green and stir fry with beef, the leaves are used for tea for various remedies. I've read that the seeds may cause sterility though. Also the smell - (that I can't stand) can be due to the variety of papaya. Our family has had some that are almost odorless and others that smell to high heaven. Personally I can't stand them either way.

And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.

Freeze it in chunks and throw it into smoothies. If you use it in combination with other fruits, say bananas and berries, the flavor might be more palatable to you.

i am jealous. papaya is a luxury that we cannot have here except for the rare tropical fruit salad in a can that we buy, and there are only a couple of chunks in the can.

i hope you can solve your problem. it is really good for you. the ideas so far sound good

I really appreciate all the responses and we're looking forward to trying the ideas out!

Drying definitely helps the aroma. We tried three different ways, just drying, soaking in lime juice first, and soaking in lime juice and honey first. The lime juice definitely helps, and the honey is a nice addition.

Little RedRidinghood, we got the plant at a native plant nursery in Winter Garden, a place called Biosphere. Not sure if they ship or not, and not sure where you are. The place did not have many of the trees, but they were all several feet tall and this one absolutely took off when we planted it. We hooked up a drip line to it and like I said, we have now have close to a dozen fruit in various stages of development; seems like it's going to be a great producer.

Interesting about the smell. Ours stinks pretty bad, but maybe we'll get used to it.

Thanks again, I REALLY appreciate all the thoughts!

Do you have a name for the papaya? I planted one that is self pollinating and while I don't have fruit yet, it is growing like a weed. The one I have is called RED QUEEN. I know what you mean about the smell and if we get fruit I will have to do some experimenting with it.
