God had actively held them in reserve for this specific time. They are reserved for use in judgment (Isa. Isa. 24:21-22; 2Pe. 2Pe. 2:4; Jude Jude 1:6). Indeed, God “works all things according to the counsel of His will” (Eph. Eph. 1:11).
for the hour and day and month and year
“The one article and one preposition before the four times, unites them: . . . it denotes the appointed hour of the appointed day of the appointed month of the appointed year.”1 They were to be released at the “hour of His judgment” (Rev. Rev. 14:7+), a time known only to God (Mark Mark 13:32; Acts Acts 1:7).2 This very moment, as we contemplate the text, these powerful angels and their related demonic horde are pent up awaiting their eventual release whereupon they will rush out upon an unsuspecting world to unleash “hell on earth.” The intensity of their malevolent thoughts and intentions likely escalates as they endure the ongoing frustration of their present captivity. What a horrific and fearsome judgment that will pour forth upon the earth dwellers at the time of the end!
to kill a third of mankind
A third of the population of the earth would be killed by these four angels and the army which they lead (Rev. Rev. 9:16-18+). Death will come by three means: fire, smoke, and brimstone. See commentary on Revelation 9:18.
The trumpet judgments share a pattern of affecting one-third of what they target. In the first trumpet judgment, a third of the trees were burned up (Rev. Rev. 8:7+). In the second trumpet judgment, a third of the sea became blood, a third of the creatures in the sea perish, and a third of the ships were destroyed (Rev. Rev. 8:8-9+). In the third trumpet judgment, a third of the rivers and springs are poisoned (Rev. Rev. 8:10-11+). In the fourth trumpet judgment, a third of the sun, moon, and stars were struck so as to be darkened (Rev. Rev. 8:12+). In the fifth and sixth trumpet judgments, all men without the seal of God are tormented, and then a third of them are killed.
When the second seal is opened, peace is taken from the earth and people kill one another (Rev. Rev. 6:4+). When the third seal is opened, there is great famine and presumably additional deaths occur (Rev. Rev. 6:5-6+). When the fourth seal is opened, Death and Hades kill “a fourth of the earth” (Rev. Rev. 6:8+). If the fourth of the earth describes a region, then we can’t be sure what proportion of the total population die—it would depend upon the region and the distribution of the population. If we assume that roughly one fourth of the population remaining alive at the time of the third horseman’s ride perish in the judgments of the third seal, then less that 75 percent of the original population prior to opening the first seal remains alive. (Some died during the judgments of the second and third seals.) Additional people die in the preceding trumpet judgments (ships are destroyed, men die from drinking poisoned waters, Rev. Rev. 8:9+, Rev. 8:11+). Here an additional third of the remaining population perish, or one-third of the less than 75 percent which remains. After the first six seal and six trumpet judgments, the population of the earth has been reduced by more than half.
If the first seal were loosed today [December 2003], using the current world population of over 6 billion, and neglecting those who will be removed from the earth in the Rapture prior to this time,3more than 3 billion would have died by the end of the sixth trumpet in the judgments from God.4 No wonder Jesus said, “For then there shall be great tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning of the world until this time, no, nor ever shall be. And unless those days were shortened, no flesh would be saved; but for the elect’s sake those days will be shortened” (Mtt. Mat. 24:21-22).

Taiwan seeks new warplanes from U.S. as tension with China mounts Taipei, Taiwan -- Taiwan has submitted an official request to purchase new fighter jets from the United States to "counter current enemy threats," the island's deputy defense minister said Thursday. The request comes as Chinese leader Xi Jinping has used increasingly strident rhetoric toward Taiwan, a self-governed island which split from the mainland during a civil war in 1949.
China claims Taiwan as part of its territory and maintains that the two sides must ultimately be reunified.
American arms sales to Taiwan have long raised Beijing's ire. While the U.S. cut formal ties with Taiwan in 1979 in order to forge a relationship with Beijing, the two continue to maintain robust unofficial military and diplomatic ties. Those relations are underpinned by the Taiwan Relations Act, which requires the U.S. to ensure that Taiwan has the ability to defend itself.
Xi warned in a January address that he would not rule out the use of force against Taiwanese independence activities. The island's democratically elected, independence-leaning leader, Tsai Ing-wen, has opposed threats to self-rule.
President Trump's relationship with China has been tense, and got off to a rocky start when Mr. Trump broke with the United States' long-standing "one China" diplomatic policy by accepting a direct phone call from the Taiwanese leader soon after his election.
U.S. airlines bow to China's "Orwellian" demands on Taiwan recognition
China's foreign minister described the call as a "little trick" by Taiwan, and Beijing filed an official complaint with the White House, which was still inhabited at the time by President Barack Obama.
Since then, as he engages Beijing in high-stakes trade negotiations, Mr. Trump has reaffirmed his administration's commitment to the one China policy. Early in 2017 Mr. Trump spoke to Xi on the phone and the White House said after the call that he had agreed "at the request of President Xi" to honor the policy, which requires Washington to maintain only unofficial ties with China's rival.
But later that year the U.S. again irked China by announcing the approval of new arms sales to Taiwan worth a total of $1.4 billion, the first such deal with the self-governing island since Mr. Trump took office.
In January of this year, with tension mounting between Taiwan and the China, the Taiwanese military announced a series of large-scale military drills to defend against a "possible Chinese invasion."
A report released last year by a panel of former U.S. security officials and military experts warned that America's military capabilities, relative to the threats faced by the country, had diminished significantly.
"If the United States had to fight Russia in a Baltic contingency or China in a war over Taiwan," the report said, "Americans could face a decisive military defeat."
Taiwanese Deputy Defense Minister Shen Yi-ming, who announced the fighter jet purchase request at a news conference, said the goal is to provide pilots with more sophisticated equipment, in part to "demonstrate our determination and ability to defend ourselves."
Huang Wen-chi, the Taiwan defense ministry's director of strategic planning, said the jets could be anything from F-15s, F-18s and F-16s to cutting-edge F-35 stealth fighters, "as long as it meets our combat needs."

US rebukes Beijing for sending warplanes into Taiwan’s airspace
President Trump’s national security advisor, John Bolton, has rebuked China for sending warplanes into Taiwanese airspace, backing the self-ruled island against Beijing.
In a Twitter message on Tuesday, Bolton wrote: “Chinese military provocation won’t win any hearts or minds in Taiwan.”
Beijing considers Taiwan a wayward province subject to eventual union – by force if necessary.On Sunday, two People’s Liberation Army warplanes flew over the Taiwan Strait and crossed a “median line” that tacitly divides the mainland from the island.
The move, analysts in Taiwan said, was intended as a warning to the US to stop sending warships through the Taiwan Strait on what Washington calls its “freedom of navigation” operations.
The Taiwanese military scrambled warplanes to warn off the Chinese jets, which flew within about 115 miles of Taiwan proper and remained in Taiwanese airspace for about 10 minutes.
On Monday, Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen, of the independence-leaning Democratic Progressive Party, ordered that any provocation by Chinese warplanes be dealt with by force.“The military is firmly determined to defend the country’s democracy, sovereignty and security,” she said, vowing that “we will never give an inch of territory.”
Her order came as both US state and defense departments issued statements describing the Chinese act as a provocation.
“Beijing’s efforts to unilaterally alter the status quo are harmful and do not contribute to regional stability,” the US State Department said.
