Why #Ebola won't go away in West Africa
    http://crofsblogs.typepad.com/h5n1/2015/06/why-ebola-wont-go-away-in-west-africa-1.html …

Case tallies in both countries have dipped towards zero in the past few months, only to bounce back up. Sierra Leone reported 14 new cases this week and Guinea counted 10. ***

One bad sign is that people continue to die from Ebola at home and are only diagnosed as having the disease after death. "That means they've been sick for days, possibly weeks, and so they're contagious," he says. "Who did they expose? It's hard to know once they're dead."

    Return of the Ebola Outbreak
After being declared Ebola-free in early May, Liberian teen dies of the lethal virus and infects two others, reviving fears of epidemic.

By Ari Yashar First Publish: 7/1/2015

The lethal virus Ebola has largely disappeared from the news since the devastating outbreak subsided to a great extent earlier this year, but the disease appears to be on the return as Libera this week recorded its first cases after an extended lull.

The last Ebola victim in Liberia was diagnosed on March 20, and as of May 9 the country was officially declared Ebola-free - until now.

It was announced on Tuesday that a 17-year-old boy from Margibi County died of Ebola, and before doing so he spread it to at least two other people, a local health official revealed on Wednesday.

"Two more people have been confirmed positive. These people had contact with the boy. We are still waiting for more results of blood tests," the health official, Cestus Tarpeh, told AFP.

Tarpeh revealed that an herbalist who treated the boy and was therefore exposed to the lethal virus has fled authorities and is currently on the run.

Health Minister Bernice Dahn announced that the boy, whose identity has not been divulged, died at a village located near the country's international airport, to the southeast of Monrovia.

Dahn said Tuesday it is "likely that we will find additional cases."

Liberia was one of the hardest hit countries by the Ebola epidemic, with a full 4,800 civilians having died from the lethal disease according to official tolls. The outbreak, which began in earnest last March, left Liberia's economy and health services in shambles.

As of late last December, Ebola had already infected 20,000 people and killed over 7,000 in West Africa, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

WHO reported last October that with unofficial figures included, the disease is showing a 70% rate of mortality, much higher than its traditional 50% rate.

The outbreak of the disease threatened more than just Liberia and Sierra Leone where the focal point of the epidemic was centered, as cases were recorded in the US, UK, and elsewhere, triggering a global effort to clamp down on the spread of the lethal virus.

Liberia investigating animal link after Ebola re-emerges
By Alphonso Toweh and James Harding Giahyue
Liberia confirmed a third Ebola case on Thursday, nearly two months after it was declared Ebola free, and officials said they were investigating whether the disease had spread through animals before resurfacing.

Dr Moses Massaquoi, case management team leader for Liberia's Ebola task force, said the three villagers who had tested positive for the disease "have a history of having had dog meat together." Dog meat is commonly eaten in Liberia.

Africa's Ebola outbreak still isn't over

CAPE TOWN (Reuters) - The Ebola outbreak in Africa has not yet run its course with around 30 people being infected a week, David Nabarro, the United Nations' special envoy for Ebola, said on Monday.

"Probably about one third of these people are not coming from the contact list, which means they are surprise cases, and that’s a big worry," Nabarro told a conference organized by the World Health Organization in Cape Town.

Default Ebola vaccine trial proves 100% successful in Guinea

Ebola vaccine trial proves 100% successful in Guinea

Rapid development and testing of drug may bring current epidemic in west Africa to an end and control future outbreaks, experts say

A vaccine against Ebola has been shown to be 100% successful in trials conducted during the outbreak in Guinea and is likely to bring the west African epidemic to an end, experts say.

The results of the trials involving 4,000 people are remarkable because of the unprecedented speed with which the development of the vaccine and the testing were carried out.

Scientists, doctors, donors and drug companies collaborated to race the vaccine through a process that usually takes more than a decade in just 12 months.

Does This Ebola Vaccine Herald the End of the Virus?

For the first time, there is evidence that a vaccine protects people from Ebola. The interim study results, unveiled by the World Health Organization on July 31 and published online by The Lancet, suggest that a single shot can protect people who were directly or indirectly exposed to individuals with the disease. The vaccine, which appears safe, could fundamentally alter how well humans contain future Ebola outbreaks. Already, the current epidemic has led to more than 11,000 deaths and 27,000 cases

Sex and masturbation may hamper Ebola eradication efforts
    GENEVA | By Tom Miles

Isolated flare-ups of Ebola may point to a higher risk of transmission via the semen of male survivors than previously thought, undermining hopes of ending West Africa's deadly outbreak by the end of the year.

The World Health Organization's advice is that all male survivors should be tested three months after the onset of symptoms and then monthly until they know they have no risk of passing on the virus through their semen, Bruce Aylward, head of the WHO's Ebola response, told a news conference.

But a forthcoming study in the New England Journal of Medicine, based on around 200 survivors, found that around half still had traces of the virus in their semen after six months, a clinician familiar with the study told Reuters.

"The old advice of three months is no longer good," the clinician said. "The number of people with persistent virus in their semen is much greater than expected."

The clinician, who was not authorized to speak about the study, added that the risk might not only be from sex but also from masturbation.

"It's not the sex that is dangerous, it's the semen that is dangerous," said Aylward, who mentioned the study during a news conference but did not give details. "How people actually get exposed, in soiled linens or whatever, is not clear."

Transmission through semen may explain why a few cases continue to occur even though the outbreak has been almost completely eradicated by an intense international effort, recently bolstered by the deployment of a trial vaccine in Guinea and Sierra Leone.

"This virus and this outbreak in particular has a nasty sting in the tail," Aylward said. "It's not finished, by a long shot."

The latest flare-up, in a village on the northern border of Sierra Leone, followed the death of a 67-year-old woman late last month, 50 days after the previous confirmed case in the region. Transmission chains are considered to have been broken after 42 days with no new infections.

However, Aylward said that sexual transmission was "obviously not a huge risk, because if it were we would have seen a lot more in the areas that were hardest hit at the beginning of this outbreak."
