Alarming Surge In Murders And Shootings In Baltimore

BALTIMORE (WJZ) — City crime spike. A dramatic increase in violence in Baltimore. Dozens of shooting and murders in the last few weeks following the riots last month.

Christie Ileto reports some are concerned police are hesitant to crack down after six officers were charged in the death of Freddie Gray.

No parent should ever have to bury a child, but it’s Vel Hick’s reality.

“He took my baby away from me. That’s my baby,” she said.

Her 33-year-old son Louis is now one of 96 homicides in Baltimore this year–an undercurrent of violence that’s up almost one-third from this time last year.

“People have said its because morale is down, or it’s because the officers were charged. We don’t know that,” said Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake.

While city leaders are working to curb the rash of bloodshed.

A Baltimore police officer who chose to remain anonymous says the Freddie Gray case impacted policing.

“If you want them to be proactive in patrolling and trying to catch people, I could see them not being interested in doing that,” the officer said.

William Scipio heads Sandtown’s Resident Action Committee–an area once at the heart of April’s unrest.

Ileto: “When was the last time you’ve personally seen an officer in Sandtown?”

    Scipio: “Since the riots.”

Community leaders say curbing the violence means solving a systemic problem.

“Jobs. Possibilities,” said Pastor Duane Simmons, Simmons Memorial Baptist Church. “I have young people in my church who are involved. They inform me, ‘Pastor, we really don’t want to do this, but we have no alternative.'”

For now, neighborhoods continue to hear stories from mothers like Vel Hicks, who now only hope for justice.

Community leaders are also asking residents to step up and do their part to keep their neighborhoods safe.

The family of Louis Hicks says they are struggling to pay for his funeral expenses. Donations can be made to the Joseph Brown Funeral Home.

Empowered Thugs Rule The Streets – Post Riot Baltimore Shootings Skyrocket 70% – Murder Rate Increases 42% – Mayor “Disheartened”…

…Police are struggling to stop violence in West Baltimore, where officers have been routinely surrounded by dozens of people, video cameras and hostility while doing basic police work since the death of Freddie Gray, Baltimore Police Commissioner Anthony W. Batts said Wednesday. (link)…
BALTIMORE – Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake called the city’s recent spike in violence “disheartening” Thursday as police work to address a dramatic increase in homicides and nonfatal shootings.

“It’s extremely frustrating,” the mayor told reporters at a news conference. “It is disheartening, but I am still resolved to continue to reduce violent crime in our city.” Continue reading →

I like the bow ties and suits. They dress well for poverty stricken areas. Anyone know what their "signs" mean? I've been out of the big cities too long to remember.

    Default Baltimore Celebrates 200 Homocides

Timothy Smith was shaving the gray stubble from his face Monday afternoon when he heard the gunshots. He dropped the razor and sprinted downstairs and out the door.
The 48-year-old said he'd been inside his Northeast Baltimore home only a moment to get ready for work, temporarily leaving three of his grandchildren riding their bikes in the street outside. His worst fears were assuaged — the pre-teens were OK — but in an alley nearby lay a man, shot to death in Baltimore's 200th homicide this year.
    "I was hysterical," Smith said.

The city didn't hit 200 homicides last year until Dec. 7, when police said 19-year-old Tymaine Sellman was gunned down in the 500 block of Edgewood St.
A wave of killings the likes of which hasn't been seen in four decades followed the unrest over the death of Freddie Gray, with more than 40 people killed in both May and July. So far in August, about one person has been killed per day in Baltimore. Police have partially blamed the influx of prescription drugs stolen from looted pharmacies for the violence.

Police have announced several initiatives to curb the violence, including a War Room in which city detectives work with state and federal agencies to solve crimes and an embedding of 10 federal agents with city homicide detectives.
Police did not identify the victim in the killing Monday in the 2700 block of the Alameda, near Clifton Park in Coldstream-Homestead-Montebello. The man was declared dead at the scene, police said, and officers set up a temporary partition around his body in the alley as they investigated.

It was the second shooting death announced Monday. In the other, a man shot Sunday at Navarro and Groveland avenues in the West Arlington neighborhood later died, police said. The department initially reported that shooting shortly after 9 p.m. Sunday, but further details were not immediately available Monday.
Three other people were injured in two shootings early Monday morning. At about 12:35 a.m., officers found a 29-year-old man shot multiple times and a 19-year-old woman shot in the abdomen on the 1300 block of N. Carey St. in the Sandtown-Winchester neighborhood, police said.

At 3:40 a.m., officers responded to the 500 block of N. Bouldin St. in the Ellwood Park/Monument neighborhood, where a 24-year-old man was found shot in his abdomen.
The victims were taken to area hospitals for their injuries, police said.
Smith said five generations of his family live in Coldstream-Homestead-Montebello, and he's never seen such violence in the neighborhood.
"They're not allowed to ride out here no more," he said, regarding his grandchildren. "I've never known the Alameda to be like this. We used to play football right here."

But Mark Washington, of the Coldstream-Homestead-Montebello Neighborhood Association said the community is transitioning and had just celebrated National Night Out with a week of block parties.
"It's seen its fair share of hard times in the past," he said. "But I think this is more reflective of the conversation we as African-Americans need to have in our community of how we value life and what black lives mean to us."

"It puts a damper on [the neighborhood's progress], but it's not a setback," he added. "It's more of a call to arms and it reinforces that we need to do more."

Former Baltimore State’s Attorney Blames Marilyn Mosby For Spike In Violent Crime 84

She’s gutted the department, while spending a million on media to promote herself.
    Via Daily Caller:
A veteran Baltimore prosecutor is blaming state’s attorney Marilyn Mosby for contributing to the dramatic spike in violent crime that has gripped the city in the aftermath of the Freddie Gray case.
In a scathing op-ed for The Baltimore Sun, Roya Hanna, who left the state’s attorney’s office in April, says that Mosby’s actions during her short time in office have contributed to the more than 200 murders that the city has seen so far this year. In the past several years, Baltimore hasn’t reached that level of murders until November.
“Having been a prosecutor in this city for 12 years, four in the Homicide Division, I can no longer stand idly by and watch State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby avoid taking responsibility for her role in the increase in violence,” Hanna writes in the op-ed.
She points out that of the 200-plus killings, charges have been filed against only 28 assailants in 30 cases. Five defendants were released earlier this year under Mosby’s watch, according to Hanna.
“Had these cases been handled differently, had her office worked more effectively with police or made stronger arguments in court, perhaps the victims would still be alive,” writes Hanna, who now works in private practice.
