London Store 'Racist' for Promoting British Culture
"Really British"
12.8.2016
Political Correctness now dictates that having any cultural pride in your country of origin is "racist." Just ask British shopkeeper Chris Otswald, 54, who has become persona non grata among his fellow Londoners for having the audacity to open up a store celebrating British culture.
Titled "Really British," the shop in North London sells items that celebrate British culture like London Underground tea towels, brown sauce, suffragette aprons, and old-fashioned compasses. Sort of like how an authentic Italian shop in Little Italy will sell imported marinara sauce or an Irish Gift Shop will sell shamrocks with Celtic phrases. Harmless cultural celebration the whole family can enjoy.
Despite all that, several Londoners have cast a negative eye on the shop, calling it a racist outlet of cultural insensitivity in the post-Brexit era, even though Chris Otswald never intended the store to celebrate Brexit.
"The shop is in no way meant to be ‘political’ or ‘pro Brexit’, but we have had a lot of complaints saying it is or we are ‘racist,'" Otswald said. "A guy came in the other day and said, ‘What’s this, a charity shop? We said, ‘No, not at all’, and he said, ‘Well it’s racist’, and stormed out."
Amidst the harassment of people "coming in and just tut-tutting and walking out again," Otswald has now removed his beloved Union Jack flag and accepted the resignation of his Spanish shop assistant (yes, he hired a Spanish shop assistant for his supposedly "racist" store) after receiving one day of abuse from hecklers.
"Really British" has also been slammed on social media, with one man lamenting in a public Facebook group Muswell Hill and Friends: "Chris, while I applaud you setting up a business in Muswell Hill and employing local people I’m curious as to why you decided to call your shop ‘Really British’ (besides the obvious point that you will sell British-made goods)?"
The man continued: "Like many people I live in London because of its international nature, and for me personally having a big sign on the Broadway saying ‘Really British’ makes me feel you’re implying that other local businesses in the area are therefore somehow ‘not really British’. Some will no doubt say I’m over-sensitive. But I can’t help thinking that given the recent divisive referendum and the current political climate you might have chosen a more inclusive name in 2016."
In an interview with the Mail Online, Mr. Otswald said he never intended to make a political statement, just celebrate his culture.
When the idea came to me, it was kind of around Brexit time. I just thought well now is the time when importing things from Europe is going to cost more money. Let’s look to our own resources a bit and buy more things from England, promoting our own products. When you go to Sainsbury’s, it’s all about eat Indian, eat Chinese, eat Italian. You have to find the roast dinners somewhere at the back at the bottom shelf. They’ve been pushing continental things for so many years that I feel like we’ve lost our identity and need to get it back.
The left may never understand that this type of behavior led to the rise of Donald Trump, helped pass Brexit, and may very well lead to the dissolution of the European Union.
Should a shop ever be opened celebrating liberal PC multiculturalism, an apt title would be "Really Stupid."
