Canada ramping-up for challenge of extensive mental health needs of Syrian refugees

Since we are on the subject of the costly health needs of Syrian refugees (Netherlands in previous post), here is some news about how Canadian mental health providers are getting ready for the huge influx of mostly Syrian Muslims expected to be settled from coast to coast in the coming year.

Doctors in a handful of clinics across Canada are preparing for the arrival of many thousands of refugees fleeing the war in Syria. So far only a few have arrived, but more are expected as part of the new government’s commitment to settle 25,000 Syrian refugees through 2016.

“The most significant part of our practice is dealing with mental health issues,” says Dr. Meb Rashid, who works at the Crossroads Clinic, a refugee clinic in Toronto, and is currently working with Lifeline Syria to establish clinics for the expected influx of Syrian refugees in Toronto.

Meeting the health needs of thousands of Syrian refugees will not be easy, Rashid admits. “It’s really the scope of this. If we’re looking at tens of thousands of people, we haven’t seen those types of numbers before.” As well, he and other doctors are concerned that the current lack of full health coverage for privately sponsored refugees under the Interim Federal Health Program will make it difficult to meet Syrian refugees’ health needs.
Despite this, Rashid and his colleagues across the country, from Toronto to Vancouver to Halifax — where a new clinic for refugees has just opened — say they are ready for the challenge. “We’re starting to ramp things up,” says Rashid.

Islamic State supporters celebrate Trudeau’s election in Canada

“Allah Akbar and thanks to Allah, and the crumbling of the Crusader alliance continues. #Canada stops its strikes against the Islamic State in Syria and Iraq.” The Islamic State jihadis know who their friends and allies are, although they don’t seem to have noticed that Obama’s airstrikes are largely cosmetic in nature and face-saving in purpose, and aren’t a genuine attempt to “degrade and destroy” the Islamic State.

…The October 19, 2015 federal elections in Canada, in which Justin Trudeau led his Liberal party to victory and assumed the post of prime minister-designate after nearly a decade of Conservative rule, has elicited the usual diplomatic reactions of congratulations from world leaders and ambassadors. Less known, but perhaps of greater significance, is the reaction by what can be described as “online ambassadors” of the Islamic State (ISIS) and other jihadi fighters and online activists via their social media, and particularly on Twitter….
Prolific pro-ISIS cyber-security activist Abu Adam Al Maghrebi (@wilayatFezzan) tweeted on Election Day: “Reports coming in that Canada’s Liberal Party will be taking a majority position in tonight’s elections.” The next tweet read: “If they win the elections, they will eventually withdrawy [sic] from the anti-IS coalition.”

On October 20, ISIS supporter @misterdaeshi tweeted: “Trudeau takes Canada off the list of countries bombing IS. If Corbyn is elected, UK stands to go that way too.”
Pro-ISIS Computer Engineer: “Canada Runs Away”
On October 21, a pro-ISIS self-described computer engineer who tweets under the handle @jan_1_16 wrote, in response to the news: “#Baiji #ISIS You would think they were united, but their hearts are divided. O Allah separate them and don’t leave any of them. Canada runs away.” The tweet included a news story from BBC Arabic about the election.
Pro-ISIS Twitter Activist: “The Crumbling Of The Crusader Alliance Continues”
On October 20, pro-ISIS Twitter activist “Lovelydoc_42,” whose account indicates that he may be originally from Belgium, tweeted: “Allah Akbar and thanks to Allah, and the crumbling of the Crusader alliance continues. #Canada stops its strikes against the Islamic State in Syria and Iraq.”
Pro-ISIS Account Celebrates Withdrawal From Bombing Campaign, But Notes: “Doubt The New Kuffar PM Will Stop Harassing Us”
On October 21, the prominent pro-ISIS account @Saifalkanadi_ tweeted, “Canada new PM to pull the country out of the U.S.-led bombing campaign against #ISIS,” and added: “doubt the new kuffar PM will stop harassing us here.”…

Canadian Man Wearing “Infidel” Patch Stabbed For Allegedly Offending Muslims…
How dare he trigger a micro … errrr … macroaggression.

On Sunday, September 20, 2015 at 11:18pm, CP24 dryly reported that “a man in his 50\s is in serious condition in a hospital after he was stabbed multiple times in Scarborough on Sunday night.”
According to the Police, “the man was stabbed in the area of Danforth Road and St. Clair Avenue East, just after 10 p.m. Sunday” and “several suspects were seen fleeing the area on foot.”
CP24 also quoted the Paramedics who said that “the man was rushed to the hospital trauma centre for treatment. He suffered multiple stab wounds.”
Since then the Police has not provided any further details about the motive of the stabbing attack or the identity of the perpetrators.
On October 29, CIJnews sent a query to the Police containing a link to the CP24 news report accompanied with the following questions:
Did the Police arrest any suspects?
What was the motive of the stabbing attack?
Does the Toronto Police regard this stabbing attack a hate crime/ terrorist attack/ criminal attack?
In response to the query, the Police Media Relations Officer wrote in an email sent to CIJnews that she “was unable to locate an incident with the location you have provided” and asked for “more information to follow up.”
CIJnews provided her with the names of the victim and the Detective who interrogated him in hospital. The Police Media Relations Officer has not yet responded to the latest correspondence.
The 56 year-old victim, who asked not be identified due to security concerns, told CIJnews that the stabbing attack took place at the entrance to the Sports Lounge Bar at Kennedy Road and St. Clair. A devout Christian who also follows the Jewish Torah, the victim was a regular at the bar on Sundays and was not shy about speaking about his criticism of Islam. The jacket he wore on the day of the stabbing had a patch on its front that reads “Infidel” in English and in Arabic (كافر).
At one point of that evening, he went out to bring in an amplifier from his wife’s car. At the entrance to the bar, three unfamiliar males stopped him. One of them, a white 6′ 4 male with dark hair and many tattoos on his body, presented himself as a Muslim, confronted him and inquired about the “Infidel” patch. After explaining to them that he is a Christian who collects patches, he felt intimidated as the three started closing in on him while his back was facing the entrance door with no way to escape.
He was told: “You offended my friend” and then the shortest guy, who stood suspiciously quiet and abstained from engaging in conversation with him, pulled a knife from his friend’s jacket and started stabbing him repeatedly in the abdomen.
The victim was taken by surprise from the unexpected hostile behavior of the three strangers, of whom two had a Mideastern appearance (one with Quebecois accent). At first he did not realize that he was stabbed as he wore a knife-proof biker vest. Instinctively, he tried to move away the hand of the attacker who “poked” him, and by doing so he sustained cuts in his palm and the attacker now aimed his knife under the vest causing two stabbing wounds.

The Liberal government intends to honour its promise to resettle 25,000 Syrian refugees to Canada over the course of the next seven weeks, says newly-appointed Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship John McCallum.
“It certainly remains our objective to get them here by the end of the year,” said McCallum during an interview on CBC News Network’s Power & Politics Friday.
“Military bases are a possibility… air transport… even naval transport has not been ruled out.”
“It’s a large amount of work to do in a very short time,” he said.
There is more, here. By the way, the previous government (Harper) had said Canada would take 10,000 over the course of the next year.

Every one of you must continue to pound your elected officials in Washington (I know they are weak), but they seem to be the only thing standing between us and a mass invasion from the Middle East. Canadian mag puts jihad murderer on cover, portrays him as victim

“It’s a disgrace that he is on the cover of a mainstream news magazine, being portrayed as a victim, and in the company of two real victims, including a victim of Islamic terrorism.” Quite so — and of a piece with the mainstream media’s avid desire to portray Muslims as victims, no matter what the facts are, and to downplay and deny the reality of jihad terrorism.

Canadian weekly news magazine Maclean’s has stirred up controversy with the cover of its November issue, which features convicted terrorist and former Guantanamo Bay inmate Omar Khadr.
Khadr, then 15 years old, was indicted in the death of U.S. Army Sgt. 1st Class Christopher Spee, who was killed by a grenade during a 2002 firefight in Afghanistan. The Canadian citizen was held in Guantanamo Bay for 10 years, though the U.S. military commission that oversaw Khadr’s case didn’t convene until 2010, when he finally plead guilty to war crimes charges. At the time, the case was widely criticized for its treatment of Khadr as an adult — despite his being a minor at the time of the alleged incident.
In 2012, Khadr was released and repatriated to Canada under strict conditions. In an interview with Fox News back in May, Sgt. Spee’s former colleague, Sgt. Layne Morris, criticized Khadr’s early release.
The murky nature of what happened to Sgt. Spee, and Khadr’s memory of the event, have largely cast further doubt on whether or not the former 15-year-old was responsible for the U.S. soldier’s death. After all, when he was found following the firefight, he was severely injured and buried under several feet of rubble.
According to The Enemy Within: Terror, Lies and the Whitewashing of Omar Khadr author Ezra Levant, however, Khadr’s being featured on the Maclean’s cover is an egregious mistake.
“It’s a disgrace that he is on the cover of a mainstream news magazine, being portrayed as a victim, and in the company of two real victims, including a victim of Islamic terrorism,” he told Fox News. “They have managed to transform a pathological murderer into a ‘victim,’ providing Al Qaeda with a great PR victory.”

Canadian Left all excited by prospect of 25,000 Syrians to arrive before end of THIS year

My alerts from yesterday (BP=Before Paris) are filled with many stories from Canada, from provinces across the entire continent, where citizens are gearing up to “welcome” the Syrian Muslims—25,000 of them—promised by Canada’s new President who is sticking by his pledge to get them relocated in Canadian towns and cities by the end of December.

We previously reported on how Sweden had made a mistake by offering rustic resort lodgings to Muslim migrants, here. We were told by readers that it has to do with the trees (where spirits hide!).
Doesn’t that old line—beggars can’t be choosers—come to mind!

Some refugee advocates have applauded a B.C. resort manager’s offer of accommodation for incoming refugees, but others are now questioning whether a lodge in Golden is the best place for the newcomers.
Beaverfoot Lodge is located about a half an hour away from Golden, and resort owner Raphael Assaf believes it would be an ideal location for new refugees to live temporarily once they’re in Canada.
Marilyn Perry, chair of the Central Okanagan Refugee Committee, disagrees.
“Refugees have already been in refugee camps — they don’t need something else temporary. They need to be able to find a group and a house and get located in a city and begin to integrate,” said Perry.
Refugee support groups are scrambling to prepare for the 25,000 refugees from Syria and Iraq Justin Trudeau promised his government would accept by the end of the year.
Perry, who’s based in Kelowna, thinks the new Canadian government will begin processing applications from people fleeing Syria and Iraq quicker once the logistical challenges of the government hand over are dealt with.
That’s when it will become difficult for “isolated situations” like Beaverfoot Lodge to handle the influx of people, she says.
