Default Police Have A Motive For Man Who Ran Down Shoppers In Melbourne

But he’s still not ‘known to be a member of a terrorist group.’
    Via Twitchy:
As Twitchy reported early Thursday, a 32-year-old Australian citizen of Afghan descent was arrested after targeting Christmas shoppers with his car. Both the driver and a second man, who was photographing the aftermath of the attack and who also reportedly had three knives on him, were arrested.
Police initially said there was no evidence that the incident was terror-related and that the driver had a history of mental health issues.

The Islamic State Strikes in Melbourne

Posted on February 9, 2018 by Baron Bodissey

An ISIS-inspired stabbing attack took place today (yesterday, if you’re in Australia) in Melbourne.
There’s no indication in this news story of the ethnicity of the victim, but given that he was renting the perp a room, I’d be willing to bet he’s a fellow culture-enricher. Maybe even a Hindu from the subcontinent, which would explain the murderous rage of a new arrival from Bangladesh.
    From ABC (Australia):
Woman Charged Over ‘Islamic State-Inspired’ Stabbing in Melbourne
A 24-year-old Bangladeshi woman will appear in court, charged over an “Islamic State-inspired attack” following a stabbing incident at Mill Park, in Melbourne’s north on Friday.
Police were called to a home in Callistemon Rise about 4:20pm on Friday where they found a 56-year-old man who had been stabbed in the neck while he was asleep.
The man will undergo surgery today but his injuries were not life-threatening.
His young child was present at the time but was not injured.
Police allege the woman is a Bangladeshi national who travelled to Melbourne on February 1 on a student visa.
She was renting a room at the man’s home while she was studying.
    […]
Ian McCartney, the acting Australian Federal Police Deputy Commissioner, said police are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident.
“We will allege this was a stand-alone, Islamic State-inspired attack, designed to cause harm to our community,” acting Deputy Commissioner McCartney said.
Since September 2014, when the national terrorism threat level was raised, police have charged 85 people, including this woman, following 36 counter-terrorism operations around Australia.

Frenchman won't be tried for killing Britons in Australia

BRISBANE, Australia – A judge has ruled that a Frenchman will not be tried for killing two British backpackers in an Australian hostel in 2016 because of mental illness.
Justice Jean Dalton decided in the Mental Health Court in Brisbane on Thursday that Smail Ayad was not criminally culpable for the knife attack at Home Hill in Queensland state because he had been suffering paranoid schizophrenia and thought local farmers and hostel staff were trying to kill him.

Ayad will be held in a mental health facility until he is sent to France.

U.S. attention to the tragedy intensified last year when the victims were included on a list of 78 global attacks that the White House said were "executed or inspired by" the Islamic State group and under-reported by the media.

‘10 lashes per hour, every hour from 9am to 5pm’

The right-wing Carlingford branch of the New South Wales Liberal Party is set to debate the merits and feasibility of introducing ‘Sharia-style’ corporal punishment in the form of lashes, according to local media reports.
The corporal punishment would consist of a number of lashes which would increase depending on the severity of the crime, or if it was a repeat offense. Popowski proposes 10 lashes for petty theft, 1,000 lashes for stealing a car, which would be doubled if the vehicle was damaged, 5,000 lashers for assaulting a police officer and up to 20,000 lashes for those convicted of murder, reports The Sydney Morning Herald.
The punishment would be meted out at a rate of “10 lashes per hour, every hour from 9am to 5pm, with one hour for lunch,” Popowski wrote in an internal memo as cited the paper.

The motion for debate would involve establishing panels of 20 members of the public, not more than 30 percent of which could be members of the legal profession. Carlingford branch President George Popowski said the debate will focus on ways to “straighten out the law and order system,” which would include placing sentencing responsibility on members of the public as opposed to judges. Popowski favors the reintroduction of corporal punishment as he argues it is the “fairest” form of justice as “we all feel the same pain.”

Popowski is no stranger to controversy, previously making headlines in 2016 for introducing a motion at the Liberal Party conference to ban all immigration, while referring to migrants as “criminals,” “bastards,” and “jihadists.” He will reintroduce a similar motion for next week’s meeting, calling for a complete ban on immigration and the admission of refugees. Victorian Liberal Party President Michael Kroger also had to intervene to stop a gay conversion therapy motion from being tabled at the party’s state council meeting in April.
Among other incendiary assertions, Popowski claims that Australia’s education system has been “usurped by lefties (communists),” that half the country’s population was unemployed and that global warming due to CO2 emissions was impossible.
RT.com has contacted the NSW Liberal Party for comment. However, Popowski did not respond to other media requests for a statement, citing party rules and saying “I’ll get a hiding. My lips are sealed.” Corporal punishment in the home is legal throughout Australia under the right of “reasonable chastisement,” though judicial corporal punishment was removed from the statute book for federal crimes in 1914. However, it persisted in some form or another in state law until relatively recently.

Australia Attempts to Fight Tobacco Black Markets by Banning Large Cash Transactions

This will hurt innocent people. It may harm legal businesses. And it won’t actually work.

Australia’s government plans to fight the country’s tobacco black market by banning cash payments of more than $10,000 in Australian dollars—the equivalent of about $7,500 in the United States.
What this actually does is create a new black market for money exchanges while screwing over any law-abiding citizens who want to engage in large cash transactions for any number of perfectly normal reasons.
This is all about revenue, of course. Australia has the highest cigarettes taxes in the world. As in New York City—which has the highest cigarette prices in the United States, mostly due to taxes—the results are a massive black market and organized crime. More importantly, as far as the Australian government is concerned, it’s not getting its money. Officials hope the ban on big cash payments will bring in an additional $3 billion a year.
This estimate assumes the smugglers and other black marketeers won’t simply change the way they do their cash transactions, or turn to cybercurrencies, or, you know, just not comply with this law either.

Australian Government Confirms Official Role in “Spygate”…

Posted on April 18, 2019 by sundance

In response to media inquiry and FOIA demands, the government of Australia formally admitted today to the role of High Commissioner Alexander Downer and his engagements with George Papadopoulos in 2016. The timing coincides with the Mueller Report (released today), which states it was information about this engagement from Alexander Downer that opened the FBI counterintelligence investigation in July 2016.
The Australian government cited the conclusion of the Robert Mueller special counsel investigation as the background for their willingness to comply with an 15-month-old FOIA request from Buzzfeed News.
