The CDC’s latest report on firearms might not make many gun control activists happy

    Article will continue after advertisement

Gun rights advocates have long defended their right to bear arms out of a need for self-defense. And now they have a new report from the Centers for Disease Control that says they make a darn good point.
The $10 million study commissioned by President Barack Obama as part of 23 executive orders he signed in January says “self-defense can be an important crime deterrent.”
“Studies that directly assessed the effect of actual defensive uses of guns (i.e., incidents in which a gun was ‘used’ by the crime victim in the sense of attacking or threatening an offender) have found consistently lower injury rates among gun-using crime victims compared with victims who used other self-protective strategies,” the CDC study revealed.

The study, entitled “Priorities For Research to Reduce the Threat of Firearm-Related Violence,” states that “violent crimes, including homicides specifically, have declined in the past five years,” but notes that “some firearm violence results in death, but most does not.”
The CDC report said that most incidents involving the use of a gun do not result in a fatality: “In 2010, incidents in the U.S. involving firearms injured or killed more than 105,000 Americans, of which there were twice as many nonfatal firearm-related injuries (73,505) than deaths.”

The White House commissioned the CDC to conduct research on the causes and prevention of gun violence. The White House believes research on gun violence is critical public health research that is important for Americans to understand, and not advocacy.

Researchers found that the majority of firearm deaths are not from homicide, but from suicide. Suicides, according to the study, account for 61 percent of the more than 335,600 people who died from firearm-related violence in the United States.
The report states that African-American males are most affected by gun-related violence, with “32 per 100,000” deaths. Risk factors and predictors of violence include income inequality, “diminished economic opportunities . . . high levels of family disruption” and “low levels of community participation.”
As for gun control measures potentially having an effect on decreasing casualties, the report expresses uncertainty: “Whether gun restrictions reduce firearm-related violence is an unresolved issue,” and there is no evidence “that passage of right-to-carry laws decrease or increase violence crime.” It also stated that proposed “gun turn-in programs are ineffective.”

Obama Pushes for New Gun Control in Op-Ed for Harvard

President Obama advocated for more gun control measures in an editorial he wrote for the Harvard Law Review on Thursday.
In a lengthy essay titled “The President’s Role in Advancing Criminal Justice Reform,” Obama urged the country to “take commonsense steps to reduce gun violence” while celebrating the executive orders he has enacted.
“We also need to do everything we can to keep our children and communities safe from gun violence,” Obama said. “Addressing the country after mass shootings has been one of the most frustrating and disheartening responsibilities of being president–and it’s something I’ve had to do far too often.”

“The names of so many places that should be remembered for their great contributions and strong communities–places like Tucson, Aurora, Newtown, Charleston, and Orlando–still conjure up for me the deep sadness of so much unnecessary violence and loss,” the president continued.
He described gun violence as “an epidemic playing out across the country” and decried the involvement of firearms in crimes, suicides, and accidents.
Obama went on to say that he has “tried to remind the country of how much common ground we can find on these issues” before decrying the reaction many Americans have towards tragic shootings.
“After a tragic shooting, we always come together to wrap those who are grieving with our prayers and love,” Obama wrote. “But as I’ve said many times: ‘[O]ur thoughts and prayers are not enough.’ They alone won’t ‘capture the heartache and grief and anger we should feel,’ and they do ‘nothing to prevent this carnage from being inflicted someplace else in America.’ We have a responsibility to act.”
Obama said that action to be taken should be “commonsense steps to reduce gun violence that are consistent with the Second Amendment.”
The president then touted efforts he made during his administration, mostly through executive actions. He cited “dedicating more resources to ensuring those background checks are conducted on time” and “jumpstart[ing] the development of smart gun technology” as examples of his gun-related accomplishments.
He also pointed to his January 2016 executive order, which was originally sold by White House officials as a substantial change in how the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives would determine who needs a license to sell firearms but was later revealed to change little about the process.
Obama said his efforts were not enough, though.
“But there’s a great deal of work left to be done,” he wrote. “Congress should pass the kinds of commonsense reforms supported by most of the American people–from investing in access to mental health care, to expanding background checks, to making it possible to keep guns out of the hands of suspected terrorists. The actions we take won’t prevent every act of violence–but if even one life is spared, they will have been well worth it.”
They swore, if we gave them our weapons, that the wars of the tribes would cease.
“As a general rule, the earlier you recognize someone is trying to kill you, the better off you’ll be.”

With Just Days Left, Obama Asks SCOTUS To Defend Gun Control

With just 14 days left in office, the Obama administration has petitioned the Supreme Court to hear a significant Second Amendment case that could maintain restrictions on firearms.
The solicitor general, who represents the U.S. government before the high court, filed a petition asking the justices to review a decision from the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, which ruled that Second Amendment rights may be restored to certain individuals who have completed their jail sentences. Federal law currently prohibits many classes of former convicts from possessing firearms.
The two respondents in the case, Daniel Binderup and Julio Suarez, were convicted of misdemeanors in Pennsylvania. Though they persuaded the Pennsylvania courts to remove a state law that disqualified them for possessing firearms in 2009, federal law continues to deprive them of Second Amendment protections. Binderup and Suarez are effected by the federal prohibition because their misdemeanor convictions are punishable by more than two years in prison — a qualifying offense under the federal law. Neither served lengthy prison terms.
The pair are represented by Alan Gura, who successfully argued two landmark Second Amendment cases before the high court. (RELATED: 9th Circuit Overturns Gun Rights Victory)

It is somewhat unusual that the solicitor general would ask the high court to take up a merits case this late in an administration. However, the judges of 3rd Circuit divided over a number of questions in their ruling, and the case involves exceptions to a categorical rule. Both factors make the justices more likely to take the case. All things considered, the case is a strong contender for Supreme Court review.
The petition can be withdrawn when President-elect Donald Trump takes office on Jan. 20. The Trump transition has not announced who will serve as solicitor general in the new administration. Reports indicate that Trump and Attorney General-designate Jeff Sessions are seriously considering George Conway III for the post. Conway is the husband of Trump senior advisor Kellyanne Conway and currently practices at Wachtell Lipton Rosen & Katz in New York.

This report was directed with small children surrounding Obunghole as he signed the "executive action" as executive order sounded too authoritarian but it was an E.O. early 2013 (Jan?).

It was mostly left leaners but at least one or two researches that took the effort to study any positive benefits of an armed society were included and I'm sure there were protest against them being included. CDC took a budget cut prior when they allowed biased anti-gun propagandist to suck tax money (grants) and be published without peer review.

The initial 2013 report was completed (summer) with little to no fan fare from the executive branch, the anti-gun groups; Bloomturd's MAIG, MDA and Nevertown as well as VPC, Brady Bunch and Gabby's gang. They were silent as was the major media.

Typical and expected when the truth is actually presented with these douche nozzles.

They did change tactics and began a campaign to claim "gun control" was "suicide control" as the majority of the "GUN DEATH" numbers were from suicide.

So onward they push that narrative and ignore substitution as well as treating mental illness and depression...

OBTW the researchers claimed more study was needed ($$$$$$) and this report was a preliminary report. No word from the current administration in action as to when they would push more "gun violence" studies but they still shill it.

President Obama Says U.S. Constitution ‘Just a Piece of Parchment’
    Monica Sanchez
    1-10-17
President Obama, as he concluded his farewell address in Chicago on Tuesday, called the U.S. Constitution “just a piece of parchment."

“Our Constitution is a remarkable, beautiful gift,” said Obama. “But it’s really just a piece of parchment.”

“It has no power on its own,” he went on. “We the people give it power. We the people give it meaning with our participation and with the choices that we make and the alliances that we forge…”

He later said that as he steps down from the presidency, he plans to play an active role in "the most important office in a democracy: citizen."
9 more days and we won't have to suffer this fool any longer. I hope once Trump's sworn in we can have a "blackout" of what Obama says.
