Two summers ago, time of second cut, I payed a pretty penny for an off the lot JD 348 baler. They got it all ready, and delivered it out to me all ready to go. Well, after two days of broken bales, phone calls to the dealer, blah blah, they send a guy out. He gets it going but barely. I was still breaking about every tenth bale, but then it rained and I lost half a field of hay....not a happy guy. So, they bring it in and "fix" it....all ready for the next spring. Same problem again....wait two days for someone to show up....lose half a field of hay to rain again....grrrr. by second cut, it was running decent, they said they had found the problem with a couple of seized bearings. It was still breaking more bales than a new baler should, but I chalked it up to junk twine and cleaned up the baler for winter and stored it. In the mean time, the dealer says to just give the baler some break in time and it'll stop breaking bales....ok. So, three weeks ago I get the baler ready, grease, lube, hook up to the pto, everything appears in order. So yesterday morning Ihad half a field ready to go....guess what. So I call the dealer and tell them I'm about to roll their baler off a cliff and go buy a New Holland. But they can't get anyone out to fix it...GRRRR!!!! So, the warranty is up anyway, so I call the neighborhood guy who works on equipment as an independent. He can't make it, but says he can get to me first thing in the morning. So this morning he shows up and it takes about two minutes of running it to know the problem....the tucker fingers had been seized up from day one. I cn't see that happening from the tractor, I thought it was breaking twine, but it wasn't letting the second knot get tied. An easy fix, but now I'm pressing up against weather again.... Guess what. Half a field again....drenched. Moral of the story....screw the warranty, always call the guy you know is competent....and next time, maybe buy New Holland. At least I got about 100 bales, and not a single break. But lost probably 250.
