A former Disney executive was sentenced Friday to more than six years in prison for sexually abusing a girl in Portland a decade ago, when the girl was 7 years old.
Michael Laney, 73, will serve 75 months for four counts of first-degree sexual abuse. Judge Benjamin Souede had previously acquitted Laney of three counts of first-degree rape and three counts of first-degree sex abuse.
Laney’s attorneys, Stephen Houze and Jacob Houze, on Thursday asked the court to postpone enforcing any part of his sentence that would send him into custody while Laney appealed part of the sentence. In a supporting statement, Jacob Houze said the claims against Laney were contradictory and inconsistent, and that there was no physical evidence.“The character of the evidence is just stories, and the strength of those stories is exceedingly low,” Houze wrote in a statement.
Laney’s attorneys also cited some of Laney’s personal circumstances, noting that he is the caretaker for his wife, who has Parkinson’s disease.
“Sentencing Mr. Laney to any amount of incarceration, much less an actuarial true life sentence, disproportionately impacts him more than a defendant without those personal characteristics,” they said in a statement.
Laney’s wife’s doctor, Blain Crandell, submitted a letter on Laney’s behalf, saying his wife “could be expected to suffer serious consequences to her health and well-being” without an in-home caregiver, a role her husband had been filling.
In a response to Houze’s statement, Multnomah County Deputy District Attorney Charles Mickley called the claims “peculiarly offensive and insulting.”
"Defendant wholly ignores the compelling evidence of his guilt presented at trial, including the evidence of his longstanding sexual interest in children,” Mickley wrote.
Laney was also sentenced to 120 months of post-prison supervision, minus time served, and was ordered to pay a $4,000 fine.
Court documents state that Laney is a resident of Bainbridge Island, Washington.

Founder of the NXIVM sex cult Keith Raniere was found guilty on all federal charges for running a “sexual pyramid scheme” in which he branded, trafficked, and enslaved young women.
Prosecutors said Raniere, known as “Vanguard” among his followers, helmed a secret group within NXIVM called DOS, where he recruited female “slaves” to work as “masters” of their own slaves, and performed rituals where he branded them like cattle and forced them to perform sex acts.
“This trial has revealed that Raniere, who portrayed himself as a savant and a genius, was in fact a massive manipulator, a con man and the crime boss of a cult-like organization involved in sex trafficking, child pornography, extortion, compelled abortions, branding, degradation and humiliation,” said Richard Donoghue, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York, told reporters Wednesday. “The evidence proved that Raniere was truly a modern-day Svengali.”

The jury deliberated in less than five hours to reach a verdict, and convicted Raniere of seven federal charges, including sex trafficking, sex trafficking conspiracy, attempted sex trafficking, forced labor conspiracy and wire fraud conspiracy, and multiple counts of racketeering conspiracy – including sex with a 15-year-old girl.
Raniere was arrested in Mexico in 2018 after investigators had gathered enough evidence from several of his “slaves.”
Others have already been convicted for their roles in NXIVM’s operations, including “Smallville” actress Allison Mack, billionaire Seagram heiress Clare Bronfman, and mother-daughter duo Nancy and Lauren Salzman; Nancy had co-founded NXIVM with Raniere in 1998.
NXIVM billed itself on its website as “a community guided by humanitarian principles that seek to empower people and answer important questions about what it means to be human.”
Notably, the sex cult had numerous links to prominent Democrat socialites like the Rothshild family and Richard Branson, and had even donated nearly $30,000 to Hillary Clinton’s 2016 campaign.
2020 Democratic candidate Kirsten Gillibrand’s father even worked for the sex cult at one point, according to court documents.
Raniere’s lawyer Marc Agnifilo told NPR that his client “maintains his innocence and we do intend to appeal.”
Raniere will be sentenced on September 25, and could face life in prison.

Afshin Yaghtin of New Covenant Baptist Church was arrested for obstructing an officer as he contended with police that the South Hill Library is public property and that he should be able to speak adjacent to the facility instead of being required to stand across the street.
Video footage posted to social media shows police telling Yaghtin that if he does not support the event, he needs to stand on the other side of the street, away from the library — though those defending the drag queens were permitted to be on the same side.
“So, I can stand right here,” Yaghtin states to one officer. “No, you are going to need to go across the street,” the officer replies.
Yaghtin then speaks to another officer, and is again told to stand across the street. He asserts that the library should be considered public property as the event is solely in one room.
“This is a public library. The only event that they’ve reserved is a private room,” Yaghtin argued. “The rest of the library is U.S. property. … I have the right to free speech wherever I want to speak.”
