Portland mayor asks feds to bar free-speech and anti-sharia rallies after stabbings

“The mayor of Portland, Ore., is calling on federal authorities to cancel a pair of upcoming rallies organized by conservative groups, saying the city was still ‘in shock’ after two men were fatally stabbed on a commuter train Friday while fending off a man shouting anti-Muslim slurs.”
So says the Washington Post, following the establishment media that this was an “Islamophobic hate crime.” The truth is, as always, different from the media narrative. In reality, this is one part of Jeremy Joseph Christian’s rant: “You don’t like it? You got a problem with what I’m saying? F*** all you Christians and Muslims and f****** Jews , f****** die. Burn you at the stake… f****** die.”
That’s right: he railed against Jews, Christians, and Muslims. But there are so few actual hate crimes against Muslims, belying the establishment media narrative that Muslims are routinely victimized in the U.S., and so this one will have to do, and is being pressed into service to shore up the sagging “Islamophobia” narrative.
Meanwhile, contrary to establishment media claims that Christian was abusing two Muslim women, here is a photo of one of the women he was yelling at. If she is Muslim, she is not showing it by wearing hijab or any other visible sign of her faith:

Despite the facts of the case, Portland’s fascist mayor, Ted Wheeler, is seizing upon Jeremy Joseph Christian’s crime to try to shut down free speech and anti-Sharia rallies in his city. A maniac killed two people, and so therefore dissent from the establishment line and opposition to a legal system that denies basic rights to women and non-Muslims must be forbidden.

The mayor of Portland, Ore., is calling on federal authorities to cancel a pair of upcoming rallies organized by conservative groups, saying the city was still “in shock” after two men were fatally stabbed on a commuter train Friday while fending off a man shouting anti-Muslim slurs.
Mayor Ted Wheeler asked the federal government to revoke a permit authorizing a June 4 “Trump Free Speech Rally” in Portland’s downtown. He also called on the government to block a “March Against Sharia” that is scheduled for June 10 but has not received permits.
“Our city is in mourning, our community’s anger is real, and the timing and subject of these events can only exacerbate an already difficult situation,” Wheeler wrote in a Facebook post Monday.
He added that he had asked the organizers of the rallies, which he referred to as “alt-right demonstrations,” to cancel their events.
“I urge them to ask their supporters to stay away from Portland,” Wheeler wrote. “There is never a place for bigotry or hatred in our community, and especially not now.”
The federal government controls permitting for the plaza where both rallies are set to take place. The city of Portland will not issue any of its own permits allowing organizers to hold the events elsewhere, Wheeler said.
Portland has spent several days reeling from the deaths of Taliesin Myrddin Namkai Meche, 23, and Ricky John Best, 53, who were stabbed and killed as they tried to protect two young women from a man who boarded a light-rail train and began yelling hateful comments about Muslims at them. A third man who intervened was injured.
The suspect, 35-year-old Jeremy Joseph Christian, has a history of making bigoted comments online and was photographed giving a Nazi salute at a recent protest organized by the group behind the “Trump Free Speech Rally.” Local publications as well as the Southern Poverty Law Center have described him as a “known white supremacist.” He is charged with aggravated murder, attempted murder and other charges….

And the Southern Poverty Law Center is a trustworthy source because…?

The organizer of the “Trump Free Speech Rally,” Joey Gibson, sought to distance himself and his group, Patriot Prayer, from Christian, especially as reports surfaced that he appeared at the group’s other events. In a video posted to Facebook on Sunday, Gibson condemned Christian and said antifa protesters were trying to incite chaos at the upcoming rally by exploiting the attacks on the train.
“There’s going to be more intensity, there’s going to be more threats,” Gibson said. “They’re using the deaths of these two people and Jeremy Christian — they’re using it to get Portland all rowdy about our June 4 rally and it’s absolutely disgusting.”
Gibson urged his supporters to remain calm. “You throw one punch, you’re going to jail,” he said.
A Facebook page for the event says the rally will feature live music and “speakers exercising their free speech.”
The “March Against Sharia,” which Gibson is also involved in, says Islamic law “is incompatible with our Constitution and American values.” The event page calls on supporters who “stand for human rights.”
The American Civil Liberties Union of Oregon criticized the mayor’s attempts to shut down both rallies, saying the government can’t revoke or deny a permit based on the demonstrators’ views.
“It may be tempting to shut down speech we disagree with,” the ACLU tweeted, “but once we allow the government to decide what we can say, see, or hear, or who we can gather with, history shows us that the most marginalized will be disproportionately censored and punished for unpopular speech.”
“If we allow the government to shut down speech for some, we all will pay the price down the line,” the organization added….
In April, Portland’s typically family-friendly rose parade was canceled after antifa activists threatened to shut down roads if a Republican group wasn’t barred from the event. And earlier this month, dozens of “black bloc” anarchists destroyed property at May Day protests….

Portland GOP Chair Says They're Considering Using a 'Security Force' to Protect Free Speech

It's been quite a week here in Portland. First, there was the tragic murder of two men attempting to protect two girls, one of whom was a Muslim, from a knife-wielding maniac who was screaming insane white supremacist and ethnic slurs. In response, Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler pleaded with federal authorities to revoke the permit for a pro-Trump, pro-free speech rally (it's in a federal park, so the city has no jurisdiction to revoke the permit).
Now, in response to this latest episode of the city's failure to protect the First Amendment rights of those with which the city disagrees (see, for instance, the riots that were allowed to rage uncontrolled after Trump was elected, and the threats to the Multnomah County GOP that got an entire parade canceled), the chair of the Multnomah County Republican Party responded in an interview by saying that if Portland would not guarantee security for Republican Party attendees at public events -- events in which they've participated peacefully for years -- that they would consider bringing in Oath Keepers and the Three Percenters group to handle security. The liberal world exploded at that musing from the chair, as the media descended to describe these groups as "paramilitary white supremacist anti-government hate groups" (using the Southern Poverty Law Center's definition).



There's a lot to unpack here. First, Portland is still reeling from the senseless, tragic murders of innocent people on the MAX light rail train. Accused killer Jeremy Joseph Christian is a homeless man who has shown signs of mental illness, though he claims he's never been diagnosed. He was shouting anti-Muslim slurs and pro-Trump rhetoric at two girls on the train when three men attempted to intervene. The details are gory, but when the men intervened, Christian was shown on video to have stabbed them in the neck. Two of the men died, and the third was critically injured. The word tragedy is overused in our society, but what happened to these two victims is truly tragic.

It has been convenient for the media to refer to Christian as a white supremacist and use this tragedy to paint everyone who is to the right of Hillary Clinton with the same brush, or at least lead their readers and viewers to come to that conclusion on their own. The simple truth is, however, a lot more complex. He stated in social media that he supported Bernie Sanders, and has a lot more insane-sounding rantings there that don't amount to a coherent political philosophy. He was actually kicked out of a pro-Trump free speech rally by the organizers on April 29 because of his white supremacist rantings.

The same pro-Trump group that ran the April 29 free speech rally, not affiliated with the local or state GOP, had applied for a permit at Terry Schrunk Plaza, a federally owned park in downtown Portland, to hold another free speech rally this coming Saturday, June 4. In response to the murders, Mayor Ted Wheeler issued a statement urging the feds to revoke the permits. According to KATU News:

"My concern is they're coming here to peddle a message of hatred and bigotry," Wheeler said in a news conference Monday. "They have a First Amendment right to speak, but hate speech is not protected." The ACLU of Oregon tweeted the mayor cannot revoke or deny a permit "based on the viewpoint of the demonstrators ... we are all free to reject and protest ideas we don't agree with. That is a core, fundamental freedom of the United States."

So, that leads us to Monday, when the interview with Multnomah County GOP chair James Buchal appeared in the UK Guardian. The reporter prefaced Buchal's remarks with a statement from Mayor Wheeler:

Portland mayor Ted Wheeler told the Guardian: “Our current political climate allows far too much room for those who spread bigotry. Violent words can lead to violent acts. “All elected leaders in America, all people of good conscience, must work deliberately to change our political dialogue.”

Buchal told the Guardian that, despite threats and hostility, Republicans have every right to be allowed to express themselves in the public square:

Multnomah County GOP chair James Buchal, however, told the Guardian that recent street protests had prompted Portland Republicans to consider alternatives to “abandoning the public square”. “I am sort of evolving to the point where I think that it is appropriate for Republicans to continue to go out there,” he said. “And if they need to have a security force protecting them, that’s an appropriate thing too.”
Asked if this meant Republicans making their own security arrangements rather than relying on city or state police, Buchal said: “Yeah. And there are these people arising, like the Oath Keepers and the Three Percenters.”
Asked if he was considering such groups as security providers, Buchal said: “Yeah. We’re thinking about that. Because there are now belligerent, unstable people who are convinced that Republicans are like Nazis.”

Wheeler, of course, is responding much the same as other left-leaning politicians over the past several years. Every time a tragic event occurs that costs innocent lives, the "hateful rhetoric" and "toxic political environment" are blamed. This is the Democrat playbook that has been successfully deployed for years. On the other hand, when the far left threatens actual criminal violence and gets a parade shut down to squash the right to free expression of those with whom they disagree, it makes for a good news cycle.

At least 14 people were arrested at a free speech rally in Portland, Oregon after anarchist antifascists (or “antifa”) showed up to counter-protest, resulting in violent clashes between the two groups.
The pro-Trump free speech rally was a pre-planned conservative event in Portland. It featured Kyle Chapman, aka “Based Stick Man,” who became internet famous for hitting an antifa protester on the head with a stick.
Antifa is a far-left group committed to fighting what they see as “fascism,” including the fascism of some Trump supporters. Antifa, usually masked and in all black, regularly engages in violence and intimidation against those they disagree with.
Antifa, other anti-Trump protesters and Trump supporters clashed in Portland’s Chapman Square, and Portland police were reportedly attacked by the anti-Trump protesters.
Fourteen people were arrested, KOIN6 reports. One reporter at the scene tweeted videos of flash bangs being used by police to disperse a crowd.

An illegal immigrant from Mexico who has been deported 20 times was arrested Monday night in the sanctuary city of Portland for allegedly breaking into a 65-year-old woman’s home, tying her up, sexually assaulting her, threatening to kill her and stealing her car.
He then went on to assault another woman and commit multiple break-ins before finally being caught while running from police.

The assailant was identified as Sergio Jose Martinez, 31, of Mexico. Martinez also goes by the nicknames “Poison” and “Smyley” and the fake names “Sergio Alberto Martinez” and “Erick Acosta.”

Martinez is reportedly a drug addicted meth addict and an alcoholic with a massive rap sheet.

Martinez moved to Portland within the last three years. He appears to be transient with no fixed address. He has used a Northwest Portland shelter as his mailing address. Martinez told officials that he picks up construction jobs to make money.

Martinez is a meth and marijuana user and told the sheriff’s office alcohol is his most serious addition. Earlier this year, he told jail staff that he consumes four to six 24 oz. beers per day. In the past, he said he has consumed as much as 10 beers per day.
Records also show that Martinez has told county staff that he has numerous mental health issues including bipolar, schizoaffective, and borderline personality disorder.



His criminal record is extensive.
In California, his conviction record includes:
2008 – Burglary
2010 – U.S. alien found in U.S. following deportation;
2014 – Parole violation
2015 – Battery, theft, and obstructing a public officer
2016 – Illegal entry into the U.S.
“Defendant has entry/removal from United States to/from Mexico 20 times with at least 5 probation violations from re-entry,” according to court documents filed in March 2017.
His most recent removal from the United States was in November 2016, but it remains unknown when he re-entered the U.S.Records show that Martinez has lived in Multnomah County consistently since 2017. The county has issued 9 failure to appear warrants against Martinez since September 1986.

Portland’s Democrat Mayor Ted Wheeler insisted Portland remain a sanctuary city in defiance of Donald Trump late last year.
“There’s no place in this community for sexism, racism, religious intolerance or xenophobia,” Wheeler said. “I don’t think the values that we’ve espoused in this community are up for debate and we’re not going to be intimidated by the threat of withdrawal of federal funds to backtrack on what are really fundamental values.”
“I’m underscoring the fact that Portland is not going to backtrack on our values,” he said. “We will remain open, we will remain welcoming and we’re going to remain safe.”
Wheeler has not commented on this illegal alien’s rape and crime spree. Instead, today he chose to counter-signal Trump for moving to ban transgenders from serving in the military.
